I volunteered my extra space to help find little green men. I'm not a scientist or a computer genius. I just run the program and let them do with it as they wish. For almost 8 years now, I've done this and it has worked out ok so far. We've all seen these hiccups come and go over the years and things have worked out fine so far. Remember the screams when people were told they had to run BOINC if they wanted to keep running SAH?

It's great when Matt or Eric or one of the other guys post something but I don't expect them to drop everything just to keep us up to date on things we can see already by the way the program is running. We know there is a problem, we pretty much know what caused it, we know the guys will do everything they can to get it fixed. Why do we need to have them take time out of both their work time and their personal time to tell us what we already know?

The server is out of disk space, yes - but that's because the validators are off-line - and the validators are off-line because one was spotted trying to grant infinite credit to a WU!

I wonder what the WU used as a bribe?

Fascinating to think that all these units pending upload due to a simple-to-understand issue of server disk-space are sitting on our hard-drives.

A truly inspiring project. Even if my laptop will be dry during the coming night ;).

Thanks perryjay for the reply. I did look back at this thread, but get a bit confused and very annoyed about the various post. I think the name of the game is patience here.........

Hmmm, about other sources of income...

Have you considered writing a book about some of the things you do to keep up such complex servers. I'm sure there is material there that other sysadmins and IT support people would like to have to make their lives easier...

The one question I have about these people that post whining messages on these boards, saying that the sysadmins are unprofessional and that they owe us volunteers and should be keeping us informed of every little decisions they make, is how many of them work in IT and have any idea the scale of the task?

Or ask politely and someone would give them the answers and help them understand how difficult this is.

YEP here here shoot the messenger the mass accepts th BS

If these difficulties are causing you this much grief, as it does not seem to meet your standards of being 'professional', perhaps you should consider a 'green' alternative and switch the PCs off. Alternatively, if you can do a better job, you could always roll those sleeves up.
