Gave up coke completely and just have an occasional beer, lost about 20 lbs over last 2 years and feel much better. Probably drank a 12 pack of pepsi a day before....No fast food either so I can still eat like a pig. The carbonation also depletes your calcium...Not good for bones... I probably drink a glass a day, I wish I could cut down, but regular soda does make you fat. Reality Internet Personality |

Just so I know as it is an across the pond term. Is soda a generic term for various flavoured carbonated drinks? Yes, used to call it Pop as a kid. Official Abuser of Boinc Buttons... And no good credit hound! |

Ok, gotcha. So, in the UK most of these are supposed to rot your teeth, but none that I know of that can cause cancer, neither do they on their own increase obeseness. Although Es apparently has other info on this. Are you seriously unaware that coca-cola can contribute to obesity and of course diabetes? and diet pop contains Aspartame which has been linked to cancer..however you have to take in large amounts for that to be the case. Are you seriously unaware that coca-cola can contribute to obesity and of course diabetes? It only takes something like an extra biscuit (cookie) a day over your required calorie intake for people to put on weight. It may happen slowly, but over years those pounds add up. Coke has about 150 calories for one can. Have two and you are taking in an extra 300 calories a day. That is significant, especially as there is no nutritional benefit to drinking it. Some people can drink as much as a litre or even 2 litres a day of pop. A couple of cans of coke a day will eventually lead to a weight problem in anyone who has a regular metabolism. There doesn't have to be anything wrong with them. Reality Internet Personality |

not all carbonated diet drinks contain aspartame. some still use saccharin(sweet and low) most of the newer drinks are using Splenda. i find if i don't drink a coke zero every three days... i'm not as cheerful and ebullient... i've gone four days now and i'm getting pretty peeved.... |

not all carbonated diet drinks contain aspartame. Gee, maybe everybody has that effect. That would explain so much in the world today. So, for the sake of world peace - [singing] I'd like to buy the world a coke...[/singing]. |

Well, Coke is basically sugar. Weight gain is usually more associated with fat. If your sugar intake is high enough, extra fat will get stored. Assuming normal metabolism - there's a number of conditions where people can stuff themselves and not gain an ounce. If your diet is low fat extra sugarsmight not make much of a difference. As for cancer any mouse/rat based study is highly unreliable. IIRC cyclamate fell into disrepute because of such a study and remains banned in the US. This is due to a special detoxifying process in male mice, which will lead to a carcinogenic substance. On top of that, your gut microbes will have eaten it, before it even reaches your cells... And there is an amazing amount of people who switch to 'zero calorie' drinks in order to reduce weight, with little or no effect. Your body might get primed by the sweet taste to behave as if it was receiving the sugars and not burn fats. So if you are trying to lose weight, better stick to plain water. Oh, and if I want to lose a bit of weight I just skip a meal per day (lunch or evening) and ignore the fact that I'm hungry. Well it's very acidic - what do you think your stomach is?! Simply speaking, your stomach is very very acidic - it actively keeps itself that way. Your stomach lining is protected by mucus. (if something goes wrong there you can develop ulcers) And as for the coke, it's much less acidic - doesn't matter a bit. Much like adding a drop of water to a pool. Please, please, please, tell me there's somebody with a real medical background around here ;) Carola ------- I'm multilingual - I can misunderstand people in several languages! |

I had heard the study about aspartame giving you cancer was unreliable, but as I haven't given it up it doesn`t make a difference to me. I do however restrict how much my kids have. I am not convinced about the argument that the body is primed to think it is eating something sweet either, I have heard that before. As far as most doctors are concerned, you gain weight if your calorie intake exceeds the amount you use. I had also heard that skipping meals is bad because your body thinks it is going into a famine state and reduces the amount of energy it burns. The best thing to lose weight is to control your portions, eat regularly, eat plenty of fresh fruit and veg. Avoid excess carbs such as sugar and to exercise. That has always worked for me. My current downfall is that I still eating dessert everyday (a donut or icecream) if I cut those things out for a while I would lost weight. It has always worked before. That or get pregnant and have morning sickness for 9 months, however I really don`t want to go that route again. Reality Internet Personality |

Ok, gotcha. So, in the UK most of these are supposed to rot your teeth, but none that I know of that can cause cancer, neither do they on their own increase obeseness. Although Es apparently has other info on this. I also have a low output thyroid gland and a low metabolism, plus a few other problems. High Fructose corn syrups aren't liked by everyone over here, Some just like real sugar, instead of what amounts to corn syrup or the high fructose syrup(same thing I think). As to the bmi for Me, It's 48.7, I'd love to be saying that I had broke It, But such is not to be. Someone once said to Me that I'd been heavy all of My life and so had My parents, But they were thin and I only started gaining weight after I turned 20 and I'd leveled out at age 42 when I broke My lower left leg and dislocated My right hip and I gained more weight, about 70lbs from about 300lbs, plus I had no rehab either, except what I could do on My own. I partake of ice cream when I have the extra cash, Sometimes two or 3 times a month, Sometimes I'll have Fritos corn chips or even rarer cookies which I try not to buy at all, But then It depends on how depressed I feel, As I suffer from what used to be called ADD, Now It's a subset of ADHD, But I'm not hyper active as I'm just the polar opposite to that. I do try and eat two good well proportion meals a day though, Eggs, salt, pepper and sausage in the morning and steamed mixed vegetables(pepper, carrots, broccoli and cauliflower) with a beef patty and pepper for dinner using cooking spray(0 calories or fat on the spray). Also sometimes I'll have a sandwich made from whole wheat/grain bread with strawberry jam or fat free mayo and a slice of 50cal a slice turkey lunch meat. Update: Suz should hit 30 lbs lost on Weight Watchers as of Sat morning weigh-in. She's done phenomenally well. Since I can't do a walking stress test my trainer and cardiologist devised a weightlifting-type of stress test and I blew through it better than they "could have ever imagined"...benching 140 lbs 15 times (haven't done that in years). Feeling phenomenal and my motivation to keep this up is at it's peak. |

For those of you who take protein supplements what do you use? My trainer is big on Whey Protein Powder. I picked up a HUGE can of Whey awhile back but ran our. Went to our local store last night and they only had Soy. I already drink Soy Milk so I don't think more Soy would be useful...I may have to go to GNC and pay their overbearing prices :( |
