Hey friends...

I wanted to start a serious thread on weight loss and workout.

What works for you? Has any specific diet or weight-loss program worked for you?

What types of workouts work for you? Isometrics? Pilates? Aerobics? Flat-out weightlifting?

Please keep this thread to it's intended purpose.

Maybe we can help each other get a little healthier.

I'll give my personal regimen...

About 8 months ago, I realized my mobility was suffering out of my wheelchair and climbing my parents' steps was getting much harder than it should be. One thing I've always prided myself on is my independence so it was hitting home quick. My brothers had expressed similar concerns. Losing my mobility at age 41 was not acceptable.

Gyms are mostly useless for me-- I can only do a few machines and that compared to the cost can be frustrating.

I hired a personal trainer. Comes to the house 2x a week--$25/session (1 hour workouts). Lots of stretching and isometric-based exercises. Our main focus has been my shoulders, back and pecs. So far I've put on about 20 lbs of mass. My sheer strength is on the rise and my balance has improved.

Diet-wise: Over the past several years I've stopped eating a lot of garbage anyways. Maybe a candy bar 1x a day. I eat High-Fiber Oatmeal 2-3x a week and drink Soy Milk. I take Melatonin at night to regulate my sleep cycle.

I won't give up my soda though--I love my Coke--especially Vanilla Coke but I now only drink 1 can a day which I think is reasonable (down from 3 cans/day several years ago).

My wife--meanwhile--has lost 25 pounds over 18 weeks on Weight Watchers and I am so proud of her.

My wife and her sister have had great success over the last few years with a gym called Curves. They offer programs just for women, and encourage their clients to start any any level of effort they feel comfortable with. They go out of the way to be non-competitive and non-judgemental. Their point is not to make you some body building freak, but just to make you a little better than you are now, and then keep up a gradual improvement. My wife has moved on to a "normal" gym, after building her confidence (and losing weight) at Curves.

When my wife said that the Curves model wouldn't work for guys because it it is non-competitive, I tried to bet her 10 bucks I could be just as non-competitive as she was. She wouldn't take me up on it.

Congratulations to your wife Blurf, that's a real achievement.

I've always had to watch my weight as I tend to comfort eat and love chocolate. I'm usually fine as long as I exercise, which isn't always easy to do when you are working and bringing up two kids on your own. I was my ideal weight about 3 years ago, but then I started working full time and put on weight. (The department cookies were kept in the office I worked in).

Since moving to Canada I'm back to cycling my son to school which works out at about 40 mins a day, so I've toned back up. I would have lost more weight, but my boyfriend makes such wonderful cakes. :(

I am terrible about going to gyms and following regimes and find the only way I can lose weight is to cut out the junk food and incorporate exercise into my daily routine.

My significant-other more or less keeps me on the healthy side now, but sometimes I sneak out for an A&W gorging. :P

For exercise, I run. About 5k per day and, once or twice a week, around Stanley Park (from my home and back, about 20k.)

Thanks Es...

Just had my yearly appt with my Cardiologist today--he is thrilled with my workout regimen. He said he notices the difference in my posture and the size of my shoulders. Was nice to hear

I hear you Es!!! The only way I ever lose weight is to simply eat a little less and move a little more. I really love to bake, so it is never fun for me or for the hubster when I replace lemon meringue pie with crudites. (Eric calls crudites "crud-ite" - accent on the "crud".)

Stopped going with the bosses to the all you can eat joint for lunch ...
Dentist said, you drink too much soda, so I cut all that out ...
Do a lap around the hood when the temperature won't kill ...

Surprise, it works!

I've been using a slack version of The Okinawa Diet Plan plus a daily walk, some bike riding and kayaking and have lost 6kg in 6 months.

Slack = some donuts and lollies(Candy)and a sneaky trifle.

Blurf, congrats to your wife! Thats fantastic! My wife is currently going to the gym, she's wanting to tone up a bit herself. Her weight fluctuates, but she does real well keeping it within a reasonable area for herself. We're not big junk food junkies. Water and tea for drinks, occasionally some soda, and my wife cooks just awesome dinners. You'd swear by the way she cooks I should gain weight, but I have a hell of a time gaining anything. I got a high metabolism, nothing sticks to me. I can eat and eat, and eat, and not gain anything. I know I'll get yelled at for that, but what the heck. I'm tired of being a skinny toothpick! LOL I've tried weight gainers, going to my gym at work, nothing helps to put any kind of mass on my bones. :-( But, I still work out, I take walks with my dog around the block 2 times a day. Still gotta keep the heart healthy even though I can't get the rest of it to do anything. LOL

Walking 10 miles a day does wonders for the weight (I just wish I could do it more often).

Gave up coke completely and just have an occasional beer, lost about 20 lbs over last 2 years and feel much better. Probably drank a 12 pack of pepsi a day before....No fast food either so I can still eat like a pig.

I gave up all sodas, About the only time I have any soda, Is when I go out then It's a sprite or when I have a pizza, then It's either orange fanta(Domino's) or mountain dew(Pizza Hut). All I can do is try to maintain a balance, My left ankle and right hip will protest If I did too much as It is and the pool is out as I have a problem with My feet that seems to be tough as the only medicine I could take requires lots of trips to the Doctor for liver tests(which would increase My gas usage) or the use of a cream which contains sorbitol which My body can't handle, Besides I have no trunks and I can't swim anyway, So swimming is out. So maintain is It as I simply don't have enough resources as It stems from the fact that I can't save enough and I don't get enough every month as California is not an inexpensive place to live.

Soda is terrible. Its just empty calories. I only drink diet soda, it is my one vice at the moment (I've become very boring in my old age).

There are other exercises you can do that are gentle, talk to your doctor. Carrying too much weight is so bad for your health...and cut out the pizza! Not only is it incredibly calorific, it is very expensive too!

Diet soda is what made me gain weight. The aftertaste leaves you with a strong desire to put something in your mouth.
