I'm going to go with it could swim however way it wanted to go. Life has an amazing way of adapting to whatever it's up against. Duck would soon discover that it can place it's foot in the middle and propel itself the same way as it always does. | |

I am certain that it could compensate and swim where ever it wanted to. However, it could not fly. I know (I've done it to my down ducks) that simply clipping the tip of one of its wing feathers will prevent flight due to the un-even lift. If you clip both it can fly again. The loss of a leg would result in a change in the center of gravity so it would prevent flight. | |

I am certain that it could compensate and swim where ever it wanted to. However, it could not fly. Many years ago a group of people at a hanger I was working in "adopted" a one legged seagull, feeding it regularly on their breaks. It flew very well, thank you. Landings were a bit lacking in grace, but functional. The centre of gravity of any living creature is constantly changing (mostly due to moving limbs, and digestive processes we won't dwell upon further). In order to fly, it is necessary to have an appropriate relationship between the resultant lift force and said c. of g. Birds are masters of fine tuning the size and direction of their lift vector, and would compensate for this shift in c. of g. with no more effort than you need to compensate for your c. of g. shift if you wave an arm while walking. Try it, you won't fall over (unless you're really drunk),and you are not aware of the minor changes in your leg muscles that make it all possible. ____________   | |
