When the news about voyager sending garbage messages came up recently I wondered why doesn't SETI detect voyager's transmission the earth?

Voyager's messages are targeted to earth so we are supposed to notice them...

I'd like to know why we are not hearing voyager.

yes we've heard back from voyager. I dont recall the last "bleep" that was sent our way but it still appears to be operating. Though I do recall reading that the nuclear4 fuel that was supposed to warm the hardware was running low and this would eventually would cause the probes systems to fail

Because voyager doesn't transmit on a frequency near 1420 MHz.

That is where we make "best guesses" as to what an alien would do if they wanted their signal to be heard and recognised. Hence all the assumptions for searching around the "water hole".


Our tech and resources are far far too limited to do anything better at present.

Meanwhile, there are some good spinoffs and other discoveries...

Which SETI project?

SETI@Home does not listen to the frequency Voyager transmits on, nor does the dish they use point in its direction.

As a real system test I'd like to see them use a receiver at the frequency of an interplanetary probe and sweep the dish over it a couple times just to be 100% sure the entire chain all the way through to NTPCKR flags it. That just to supplement the software injections they have done to system test it, not that I suspect anything wrong.

I like that idea. The ISS could transmit a test message pretty easily.

Yes, something that would have an expected doppler shift for something not in earth's gravity.

So, then the moon wouldn't count either? I suppose they could put something on Mars if properly designed for this purpose.

The Cassini probe consistantly sends data back from Saturn and the New Horizons probe no problem sending back info on its way to Pluto. Perhaps someone should look into these
