Is it not time that the Seti institute/Setiquest/seti@home initiatives joined forces, to throw all that distributed computing power at data from the ATA? It seems to make sense. |

Is it not time that the Seti institute/Setiquest/seti@home initiatives joined forces, to throw all that distributed computing power at data from the ATA? Cannot give my opinion. I am too old. But SETI@home has sent a letter to my private mail with links to debates and papers on what they are doing, not only in the radioastronomy field. There is no mention of SETI Institute and SetiQuest. Seti institute and seti@home are separate entities. seti@home collect their data from a receiver piggy backed on the dish at Aricebo and send it out to us for analysis Seti institute collect data from the Allen Telescope array and do their own processing. Seti quest is a new initiative of theirs looking to the public for support in data analysis etc. They really should get together. |

Seti institute and seti@home are separate entities. Yes, but we can't oblige them. To marry, you must be in love, and they are not. Tullio |

I didn't know that there were "issues" between the two organisations, but Tullio, you guys, Italians, are experts in all matters relating to affairs of the heart, perhaps if you tutor them a little on the subject, a bargain can be sealed, like two great families coming together :) |

I didn't know that there were "issues" between the two organisations, I don't know if there are issues between the two organizations. But, in the thread "SETI@home in the news", having said that the SETI Institute seems to ignore the existence of SETI@home, I was insulted as a "nonnetto" (which can be translated as "silly old man") by a fellow Italian cruncher referring to my age of 75 years. I surmised that I had touched a sore spot. and this is why I said I am too old to make a comment. In the Einstein@home forum, instead, in a thread "Seniorcrunchers" not created by me I received many wishes from people I hardly ever knew for my birthday. Family wars are often the cruelest, like civil wars between people speaking the same language.Like Matt Lebofsky said in a post, there is often confusion in people's mind between the SETI Institute and SETI@home.Cheers. With age Tullio, you have one advantage over the young whippersnappers here, that is wisdom, that is filtering out all the crap and knowing what is truly important. I for one would trust the advise of a more "mature" person any day. As regards family disputes, I know them too well. I "had" a brother who took advantage of my elderly mother with dementia to get her house off her for his nasty wife. Unfortunately, in Ireland, you will only get justice if you can afford to pay for it. However back to the point. I still say the two seti organisations should get together. It isn't exactly an area of science where money pours in the door, so pooling their resources makes sense. The end objective is the same. If they did, I would go one step further and suggest all participating seti@home crunchers could contribute a modest $100 to help them get set up. |

AFAIK the Allen Telescope Array is being financed by Paul Allen and the US Air Force. This is probably why the SETI Institute does not want or need to cooperate with SETI@home. What you say is right in principle. But, as I said, to marry you have to be in love, otherwise it is a "shotgun wedding" and I don't have any shotgun or F22-Raptor, unlike the US Air Force. Tullio |

They sometimes make the point that its a good thing for the two groups to work separately as they will be trying to detect ET in two different ways, or two different lines of thought. Since they don't really know exactly what way ET might try to communicate, its good to try lots of different things. And in some ways, its good to have some element of friendly competition. This way each group pushes the other to come up with innovative new ways to win the competition. John. |

I am running SETI@home and 5 other BOINC projects and I like finding friends on the fora. I don't like being insulted simply for expressing an opinion. This has happened when I criticized the attitude of the SETI Institute towards SETI@home.But it is my right to have an opinion, without insulting anyone, since I never insult anybody even when his opinions are different from mine. I wish every possible luck to the SETI Institute but I shall never crunch for them. Tullio |

Just in case, anything I said was certainly not intended as an insult. If I said anything insulting, I sincerly apoligize. Steve Warning, addicted to SETI crunching! Crunching as a member of GPU Users Group. GPUUG Website |
