Anyone lucky enough to have one of these? http://www.nvidia.com/object/personal_supercomputing.html How many work units can it process a day? :) |

I may build one of these at some point in the future. However I am concerned with how much more powerful the high end ATI cards seem to be in comparison to equivalent-priced Nvidia technology. MilkyWay@home, for example, seems to run a WU in 90-120 seconds, vs 8-10 minutes for the same WU on an Nvidia card. I will definitely be doing more research into their respective technologies and applications thereof before making such a large investment in a crunching platform. |

one tesla c2050 costs $2299. From the rigs they've shown they're running 4 Teslas with intel boards. Assuming you'd go whole hog on this rig you'd want the 6 core(12 w/hyperthreading) Intel chip and a Mobo that can handle both the CPU and 4 Teslas. Then you add PSU RAM and a decent case. I'd say you'd be looking at around 10000 just for the Teslas and another $2500 or more for the rest of the rig. so Figure $12k-13k that'd be nice if you got it In a rich man's house there is no place to spit but his face. ehh forget the rip off, unless your CEO with to much cash to throw arround need absolutely everything NOW like the world was ending. and your on the brink of tears... For the rest of us, you can get a really nice i3 or i5 based system with a spiffy ATI 4750 video card. I build these guys. Was trying to get a Bench mark for the new i3 build... oops the server got stuffed. That was a week ago. Still waiting for everything to get unstuffed. So for now it's taking pictures of the Milkyway and sorting Protien strands... Be cool if I could get a MB that took 2 or 4, i3/i5 CPUs... but doesnt seem like it's going to happen. A while ago I pondered what these new game boxes could do. They seem to be scads more powerful than the normal chips and they only go for $300 or so. We need an operating system for them and a client to run BOINC applications. If I remember correctly there was actually a competing distributed computing effort that did use these boxes. Anybody got any info or comments? Daddio |
