You should check that the service is running, do a CTRL-ALT-DEL, click task manager and look in processes list for 'Boinc_cli.exe', if it's there that's fine, also look for 'Setiathome_405_windows.......' which should be running at about 95 to 99 percent, so far so good; but, if you don't see the 'Boinc_cli' listed, then the service hasn't been started, reasons could be - a failed install, or simply that you have not started it. Using the win2k 'services' admin tool which should be lurking somewhere in your start menu, bring up the list of services, near to the top it should list 'BOINC' and it's probably not running, so right click on boinc, select start, once that's done, right click on boinc again, select properties, and check that boincs' startup is automatic, and that the log-on is as the localsystem account. To check it, I use Boincview, which is very easy to use and set-up, you could also use boincspy, but I could not get this to work for some reason. Best wishes, Ken Phillips BOINC question? Ken, thanks for the input ! i already checked and boinc_cli and setiathome_4.05 are both running fine. funny thing is that other files, like client_state.xml are still being updated, but not the stdout.txt & stderr.txt ... btw ; i'm using BoincLogX to check my clients and i see progress, so the service is working OK. |

Anyway, I don't care because, they're all continuing to crunch their little hearts out for the sake of science, and results for three projects are flowing freely, it almost makes me feel good 8-) Bye now, Ken Phillips BOINC question? well, as you say, the BOINC service runs fine ... that's what matters. still strange, according to this info there should be some logging : http://boinc.berkeley.edu/service.php "Messages are logged to the 'eventlog' - check there periodically for error and status messages." can't find any 'eventlog' either ... also nothing in the Windows 'Event Viewer'. |

The service will currently not log any info, so the only way to get this info is to use a monitoring-tool. Previously it was logging to the NT "Application"-log, but because it was logging everything and many users complained of this very fast filling up the complete log-file, so they disabled the logging for now till can make it user-configurable. As for installing as service, exit from the gui. Open up a cmd-prompt and change to the boinc-directory. boinc_cli -install And it should be installed as service. BTW, make sure to remove any shortcut to the gui from startup-folder... Note, if XP, you must very likely also go into the service control panel and change the user the BOINC-service is running as to "localsystem". And start the service, or reboot. :) BTW, some win2k-users have complained of the service refusing to install for some reason. |
