Message 996809 - Posted: 17 May 2010, 22:17:20 UTC - in response to Message 996805.

note from the cheap seats:

Appreciate all the hard work. Just concerned about status out here,
because if this was not a project we believed in, we probably would not
be here.

I put 10% resources on another project of interest, and they have gotten
more than their fair share of my cpu in the mean time.

I might change it to 1%. The idea is it is something else I can do.

In bright bold friendly letters, DON'T PANIC!

Well I keep on getting no new work since the downloads start hopefully I will get some, I know it is because of the high level of traffic, so I will just sit and wait

Traffic really is high at present. The Cricket graphs look as if traffic in both directions is at an all-time record.

Servers recovered from the weekend (and an outage warning)
We have recovered from the computer crash over the weekend, but there may be continued difficulty reaching our servers due to current high levels of traffic. Also a warning: On Thursday evening (California time) there will be a lab-wide power outage for about 4-6 hours for building-wide repairs. Our web site may remain up, but all services and data transfers will be off during this time. 17 May 2010 21:48:53 UTC · Comment

I didn't noticed the power outage. You?

It was, it wasn't, it'll be today?

Seems to be a problem we Germans have with Tuesday and Thursday. I too expected the power outage for Tuesday, until I read Ageless's response to a similar mistake in another thread. :-)

Looks like there might be a problem. Out-bound traffic is good, but uploads have just dropped drastically.

Apart from uploading, Bruno appears to be working, according to the server status page. However, it says Bruno's upload side has been disabled. This would seem a little odd because that is a function of our hard-working staff. Perhaps someone forgot to switch it back on last night?

The biggest problem with failing uploads (they fail on my host too) is inhibition of downloads. For AP-oriented hosts (like my own ATI AP -oriented) it means no chances to ask for AP (and cause only one of few dozens if not few hundreds asks ends with AP task assignment) it meands idle GPU again. For low-cache hosts it means idle CPU too (from SETI project perspective, no need to tell again and again that there is many other projects).
Though there is no sense to give work if results will not go back indeed, it's known that SETI project experiences quite regular failures of upload server. That is, it's known that work will be returned it will returned just later.
Maybe project settings should account for this and change uploads threshold that will block downloads? It will allow normal work processing during short-term uploads failures but still will block downloads for hosts that not able to return results by themselves.

And in the UK at least, it's a gloriously hot, sunny first weekend of summer.

Time to cool the GPUs and warm the skin.

Since (over one year) I have my GPU machine at the start, I say that the '> (CPUs x2)' backlog ULs and no work request, is a BUG in BOINC. And nothing changed. I'm only a poorly SETI@home member with a high performance GPU machine.

You need to tell this in alpha or dev BOINC mail lists perhaps (but w/o any guaranties it will change anything ;) )
