I find I need to temporarily suspend SETI programs that are running when I use Windows since they seem to slow Windows applications by about 15-30 seconds. This why why one might see interruptions to processing activities from my laptop.

You might want to set the option that allows CPU processing while you are active at the keyboard and mouse to be false (set it so that BOINC is not allowed to be active while you are).

In general, if the computer has sufficient RAM for all applications to keep their working sets in memory, BOINC will run in the background nicely. Otherwise, the HD thrashes while writing and reading the swap file.
