When I open up BOINC manager, it tells me that 'project has no jobs available'. What does that mean, and what do I do about it?

It just means there are no work units available at this time. We just came back from the weekly scheduled outage so it may take a little time before work starts flowing again. Give it an hour or so and check again. It should sneak some work in on you in that time, if not then come on back and ask again and we will ask you a few questions to help figure out what's going on.

Until you've completed a few work units you are pretty much only able to post here but you should read the other entries here and in the number crunching forum. Most of the questions you may have have already been asked and answered.

As to the work it sends out, SETI gets large "tapes" from Arecibo's radio telescope and breaks them down into many smaller sections that are then sent out to us to check for signals. Don't get too excited by what you see, most of what looks like signals are just ground noise. Most of the "fun" is collecting credits. They aren't worth anything other than bragging rights but we get pretty serious about them. They give you a good idea how well you are doing and how well your computer performs.

Bopping around on these message boards will give you an idea what we are doing and how the project works. I'm sure someone else will be along shortly that can give you more information so until then, welcome to SETI

Sorry, just saw your new question. Since you posted earlier that you saw the message no work available you must already be attached to the SETI project. If so then you have nothing to do but wait awhile for the project to send you some work units. Once you get some work it will start running on it's own.
