Message 993851 - Posted: 3 May 2010, 19:04:21 UTC

Has anything changed recently to the Seti or BOINC programs. I have started getting freezes when running other programs on Windows XP. Even the mouse freezes when trying to move it across the screen.
This has only been a recent (past few moths) thing.
I have tried to reduce the CPU useage to 50% to try and stop the stutters but this has not worked. My processor appears to flick between 20% and 100% very quickly, instead of a steady 50%.
Has anyone else had similar problems?

What do you mean by "recently"?
Last week, last month, last year?

Your Computers are hidden - we can't see do you have NVIDIA CUDA capable card?

You can:
Click on ACCOUNT
Click Computing preferences
Click Edit preferences

Change (from NO to YES):
Suspend GPU work while computer is in use? - YES

Click button [Update preferences]

"CPU usage to 50%" means (works this way by design):
1 sec 100%, 1 sec 0%, 1 sec 100%, 1 sec 0%, ......

CPU computation do not slow down the computer at all
(I am now typing on my older 524 MHz K6-2+ computer - CPU at 100% for years (running SETI (almost) all the time) and I feel no slowdown).

You can check by any CPU benchmark - the results will be (almost) the same with SETI On/SETI Off (suspended).

You may have Temperature issues - check:

See Nvidia CUDA & ATI Stream (CAL) FAQ, it's a FAQ that shows you why that's happening: Seti is using your videocard to do the calculations with.

Now for future posts, could you please try some punctuation? One long sentence is extremely difficult to follow.

Sorry Jord it wont happen again. this was my first post and it's going to be my last as i do not take kindly to being spoken to as if im a child, i was just typing out a quick question for help as my pc is running slow as i still have a problem with the seti@home software, shame that my first reply is of a poor nature to a project i folow with great admeration, it's not everyone that can use proper punctuation, grammer, or even spelling, so i shall log out and uninstall the software and bid you all good bye.

I had a similar problem and didn't catch it in time so I lost my best cruncher.
Try a through cleaning...A dust buildup under the HD cooler killed my system. It was my fault as I thought I had been getting out all of the buildup and wasn't.

I just downloaded boinc 6.10.56 to a new laptop that i just purchased to work with 3 other computers I use on my seti account however when I downloaded the seti program and launched it the toolbar icon show its disconnected and when I click on it and it brings up boinc manager in simple view all it does is show dots moving in the "Retrieving current status" window of the BOINC Manager but it wont connect. I cant bring up add new projects or retrieve any data, what is wrong?

I am running Windows vista business, does that make a difference or do I nned to download sometging else?
I downloaded the same seti program for my other computers and didnt have a problem so I dont know why it isnt working now.

Did you make sure BOINC is allowed through your firewall?

Message 1007776 - Posted: 24 Jun 2010, 15:48:20 UTC

please excuse me as I am a computer dunce. I installed seti on my laptop and it ran foe a month or so without any problems. I finished more than 5 projects and the laptop would connect and get another project. That's the way I thought the program worked. For the last few weeks all I get is errors when the BOINC program try's to connect.

Question: Am I doing something wrong and my computer is set up wrong or are we having Seti problems?

nope your computer is working fine. Please note that SETI@home is the Project what you you receive is workunits or WU's. I tell you this now so that you won't get pounded about it in the future.

the seti@home Front page says it all. They've had a critical server fail and they arent able to operate normally. One problem you probably noted is that your time to completion went haywire. I had WU's that said 7 minutest that took an hour and WU's that said 20 hours that took 2. This is some BOINC update in the software and not necessarily seti.

IF you aren't getting and/or dont have any work from seti, you should consider attaching to a backup project. There are around 50 out there. If you are just looking to get through a couple of days then find one that appears to have short WU's
for longer work look at CPDN, Einstein, and under the Primegrid project check out the Cullen, Woodall, or Seventeen or best WU's all can take more than 60 hours each. the CPDN can take over a month of continuous crunching

I've been having problems with my computer freezing. I go to bed, then wake up to find it's frozen, can't be awakened with the mouse, and I have to reboot by holding the power button down. This doesn't happen every day, but it shouldn't be happening at all. I use Windows XP.

Also, I've had a SETI work unit for the last two weeks, but the computer is not analyzing it.

Does the computer go into hibernation mode?

The image just freezes, and I can't wake it up with the mouse or keyboard. I don't know what you mean about hibernation mode. Never heard of it outside of laptops, which is not what I'm running BOINC on.

Your computers are hidden, so it will be a bit more difficult to help as we may have to ask more questions.

What version of BOINC are you running?

Which install options did you choose?

Protected?

Allow all users to control?

Use BOINC screen saver?

I updated to the latest version of BOINC last week, but this problem has been going on for the last few months, even before I went out of town from May to mid-June and had it switched off the whole time.

I don't know what "allow all users to control" means. There's only one user on my computer. And what's "protected"?
