So I should hope! (BF beware, she could get used to this...)

Having been through the Canadian BC loop (quite uneccesarily) do you think you have learnt any more than the UK PGCE gave you?

I never resent any learning I have to do..so although I could have taught just as well without it, I have learnt some things I didn't know...and the system here is slightly different, although tbh I would have realised that once I started teaching and adapted very easily.

Siran...Windows loves you!...And you secretly love Windows in your logical way.

Hi Dan,

You would not say that if you heard how many times, in a day, that I have said things like, "I friggin' HATE Windoze!!!". ;)

I have NOT said anything like that about Linux. I don't have to "Activate" Linux and I do not need to "buy" a new copy for each and every PC I want it on. It's FREE and BETTER than Windoze. I only have Windoze on one PC, (well, currently, on 2, but THAT'S about to change in the next day or 2), because there are things in the world that are not made to run on Linux. :)

Keep on BOINCing...! :)

It's a love-hate relationship...Everyone hates to wait for activation...But once you get turned on it's no problem.

Greetings Dan,

This is a good example of how I feel about Windoze most times:

I used to feel that way most of the time too...Now at least my home computers have enough horsepower and RAM to run Windows efficiently...The computers at work are not quite up to it though.

Hi Dan,

I would tend to disagree on the efficiency part. While more horsepower and RAM can make Windoze run "better", I doubt it can do anything about Windoze' lack of efficiency.

Example: For as long as I can remember, with most versions of Windoze, since 95, installed on many different PCs, I have noticed a certain annoyance. After Windoze has been running for some time, a lag seems to creep into everything done on the PC.

Case in point: This new i7 PC, with Win XP Pro, has an up time of 1 day, 4 hours. I am starting to see a lag creep in. On the Core 2 Duo I was seeing a lag of between 2 to 10 seconds. I would type, such as now, and look at the screen to see that the PC was way behind my typing. After some time (2 to 10 secs) it would catch up and display what I had already typed. I have seen this anomaly since at least Win ME. I started thinking that it was related to BOINC in some fashion. That's not the case since BOINC isn't even installed on the i7 yet.

It cannot be the hardware since the hardware gets changed and the anomaly is still there with the same OS installed. I have not seen this with Linux and I have had Linux on several different PCs and my laptop. The only thing on this i7 PC that is not brand new is the case and the PSU.

Bottom line: I do not believe that better hardware can make Windoze "more efficient". It's just too bad that too many things in the real world are made to run only on a Windoze PC. It SUX! I read somewhere that about 90% of the Internet is running on *nix (Unix/Linux) servers. Too bad that 90% of everything else isn't running on *nix too. ;)

22 SETI WUs left to complete and I can shut down Windoze on the Core 2 Duo and activate it on the i7. And no, the lack of activation has nothing to do with the above mentioned anomaly. It's there even when Windoze is activated. ;)

Keep on BOINCing...! :)

If they ever succeed in creating a version of Linux that is truly user friendly and familiar enough to MS users to not scare them...Then Windows will fall...Ubuntu seems to be almost there...

Meanwhile...I have enough power and RAM with my current PC's to compensate for the lag...In other words i no longer have to sit around waiting for Windows to do what i want it to...I should have clarified what i meant by efficiency.

I just reboot the old PC's we have at work a couple times a week to maintain use-ability.

Hi Dan,

Thanks for the clarification! :) I believe that the longest up time I have had, with a Windoze PC, was 14 days. I only rebooted because of updates. That anomaly tends to subside a bit the longer Windoze is running, but it does not completely go away.

I use Kubuntu myself. Ubuntu comes with the Gnome desktop GUI. Kubuntu comes with the KDE. I have always like KDE much better than Gnome. It is quite similar in operation to Windoze, Gnome is not. Gnome is more geeky if you ask me.

I just upgraded my laptop, this morning, to the newest version of Kubuntu, v10.04 (Lucid Lynx). I was on the Kubuntu forum reading about all the problems people were having before, during and after their install. My install went off without a hitch. It downloaded, updated, cleaned up and rebooted no problem. :)

I can't wait to install it and see it running on my Core 2 Duo. And, yes, it will be running BOINC. :)

Keep on BOINCing...! :)

Well, she called me a bit ago, still not feeling well. She called her doc to see about getting a prescription, but they may want to see her, she hasn't called back yet so I don't know whats going on yet. Thanks for the well wishes, I hope she gets better too. This is the 1st time in over 2 years she's been this sick, so its a little scary to say the least.

Thanks Dan. Well, they called in 2 prescriptions for her, so we'll give those about a week to work, if she doesn't feel better by next Monday she's gonna have to get seen. So we'll see. She sounded a little bit better, but still sick.

RATS!!!

I have 3 WUs left to finish before I can shut down BOINC on the Core 2 Duo and get BOINC installed and attached to SETI on the i7. Problem is, this is all going to happen during SETI's scheduled weekly outage today! It figures! :(

I wanted to get Linux installed on the Core 2 Duo and get BOINC installed on it and attached to SETI by mid-day my time too. Doesn't look like that's going to happen either! :(

Maybe, just maybe if they can hold off on starting their maintenance until 11:00 Pacific time, I might have a chance to at least get Linux installed. I shall cross my fingers and hope... :)

@Jeremy: I'm glad to hear your mother is doing a little better. I truly hope she fully recovers before Monday. Uhh, that's "Monday" as in the day of the week, not "Monday" as in our batty friend here. ;)

Trying to...
