After I close the Boinc manager, the seti application continues running. I've looked everywhere I can think of to find the "OFF" switch for it. Why doesn't the application stop when I close the manager? I want to close it so I can work on other memory/CPU intensive apps. I have Windows Vista Home Premium. Don |

You can use the "Shut down connected client..." entry from the Advanced menu of BOINC manager to stop the client. Did you install BOINC in Protected Application Execution mode (formerly known as service mode)? You can verify this by looking for "Executing as a daemon" in the Messages tab after a reboot. If yes, it's expected for the client to continue after the manager is stopped. If not, check the exit options of the manager. Why don't you simply suspend BOINC when you "work on other memory/CPU intensive apps"? In that case, you'll have to set "Leave tasks in memory while suspended?" to "No" in your preferences. I do not see any "Daemon" messages. I don't see any "exit options" in the manager either. So it makes sense to have the client continue even after I close out the manager? Not in my book it doesn't. You're saying the only way to stop the client other than turning off the PC is to go into advanced options? Isn't that a bit obscure? what's wrong with having an option to simply quit? I have found that there are way too many "gotchas" with this Boinc thingy. You guys have made this a wonderful thing for geeks, but left the rest of us in the dust. Too bad. If it were more straight forward, you might get more help. Don |

I do not see any "Daemon" messages. The client is made of several pieces. The Manager or UI, and the daemon or controller are the two main pieces. Debugging messages are more easily accessible from the advanced view. There are several possibilities for getting BOINC to stop for a time or for particular programs. You can right click on the BOINC icon in the system tray and click snooze. This will make BOINC quit for an hour. In the advanced options, advanced view there is an item "Shutdown connected host". This will halt the BOINC daemon which should shut down the science applications on the way out. BOINC WIKI |

I do not see any "Daemon" messages. Okay, then you have installed BOINC the standard way. I don't see any "exit options" in the manager either. Then you have disabled the BOINC manager exit dialog after changing the default behaviour. To reenable the dialog, select Advanced/Options... and set "Enable Manager exit dialog?" If you exit the manager (File/Exit) after this, select "Stop running science applications when exiting Manager". However, I just checked your BOINC version and saw that it's pretty old. Maybe you'll have to upgrade to 6.10.x for my advice to work. You're saying the only way to stop the client other than turning off the PC is to go into advanced options? Isn't that a bit obscure? what's wrong with having an option to simply quit? That's the default, but you obviously changed that. I have found that there are way too many "gotchas" with this Boinc thingy. You guys have made this a wonderful thing for geeks, but left the rest of us in the dust. Too bad. If it were more straight forward, you might get more help. It's not "us guys". I'm a volunteer just as you are. :-) Gruß, Gundolf |

You can always click on "suspend" button on the main screen of the manager. |
