John.

Yes, with only one post asking if I prefer GIT or Subversion. What are they?

There's lots of forum messages, you have to login to see them.

It looks like he just installed the forum software and i'm sure it will take him a few days to iron out the small snags - Like currently you can only post new topics, you cannot reply. But i'm sure they will fix it if there's enough complaints.

In most forums (or fora) I know I can read the messages even if I am not a registered member. I have to be a member to post. If I cannot read the messages how can I see if the contents are understandable by me? It seems to me that SetiQuest is looking for programmers, not simple crunchers like myself.

Just like any forum, you must register; http://www.setiquest.org/user/register

And login; http://www.setiquest.org/user

And you are corrct, they DO NOT want you to volunteer your spare computing cycles like the BOINC powered projects do. They want you to volunteer other things, like your skills and your mind - http://www.setiquest.org/join-the-quest

Its Not SETI@home, but its looking for the same thing, to find ET.

I cannot see any reason for SetiQuest not to join the BOINC program, like IBM has done with its World Community Grid. But probably there are reasons I do not know. Maybe the fact, discovered by me in a "Nature" article, that the operation of the Allen Telescope Array is financed by the US Air Force is one of these reasons.

Yes, there's always a conspiracy theory, isn't there!

Darn US government and US air force are always hiding something from us, aren't they.

Maybe they just don't want to use BOINC software. Maybe they just want to do something different to SETI@home. Lets face the facts, BOINC software is complex and the SETI@home scientists have massive difficulty with making the SETI@home project do even the most basic things - Like combing the data for ET signals. They have been at it for 10 years now and they still can't keep the servers running. Its good to see the SETI institute try something different.

The only programming language I know enough to write a program is LOGO, and I don't think it would be much useful. But BOINC is hosting programs written by very skilled programmers, like CPDN, AQUA, QuantumFire, Einstein, QMC. etc. BOINC is not an application,it is only middleware.
Tullio
I forgot to mention LHC@home, which helped design the LHC and now gives work units (only Windows, unfortunately) to help the LHC upgrades. The application is called SixTrack and is written in FORTRAN. Also in millions of lines of FORTRAN are the CPDN apps, written by the UK Meteorological Office. All those work in the BOINC environment. AQUA is the only multithreading app in all BOINC. So skilled programmers do not want to reinvent the wheel, they just use it.
