fixed your link

I heard about this yesterday on NPR. It appears a large rocky meteorite(1 or more cubic yards of material) lit up the midwestern sky 2 nights ago. pretty impressive when you consider how small that clump is

And as there were no reports of any new holes in the ground it also must have been traveling at escape velocity or it disintegrated at altitude,any news on that aspect?Sould have read the CNN report first as it said that it did break up.

according to the report I heard it most likely broke into smaller pieces and landed over a 5 county wide area in rural Wisconsin. It's unlikely any part will be found or identified

Officials in the Geoscience Department at the University of Wisconsin in Madison have asked people who find fragments to bring them in as soon as possible and professor John Valley says their plea already has yielded results.

“We’ve been studying a sample here at UW-Madison that was brought in by a landowner west of Madison,” Valley says.

Valley has worked in the university’s geoscience department for 28 years, but this is the first time he’s seen part of a meteorite.

“The piece we have is very small, about the size of a peanut and there might be smaller pieces or bigger pieces,” he says.

<snip>

“It is on the outside a dull-black, matte black finish which is the fusion crust from where it became very hot falling through the atmosphere,” Valley says. There are crystals on the inside, according to Valley.

No, it's there. I apparently was suffering a cranial-rectal inversion when I posted. Sorry 'bout that, Richard.

Meteorite hunters descend on Iowa County farms

Town of Linden — - Billions of years before last Wednesday night, two asteroids collided somewhere in outer space, sending a rock on a path that ultimately led to Kevin Wasley's farm field.

It took much less time to nudge the orbits of meteorite hunters careening to southwestern Wisconsin where their zeal for tiny black rocks from outer space has created quite a sensation and boosted business in nearby communities.
