Message 983488 - Posted: 25 Mar 2010, 12:24:43 UTC

I've just checked my BOINC projects after a while and noticed that none of my SETI results had been reported. The reason appears to be that my account has vanished. I am told no such user exists whether I try and login from the BOINC manager or directly through the website, and SETI has disappeared from my list of associated projects when I login to one of the others I run. As far as I can from the unreported results the problem occurred about 25th-26th January.

Anybody got any ideas? Have there been any issues with lost accounts? I've had to create this account just to access the help board.

Seti doesnt delete accounts. Its possible that you used a different email account to login to seti.

Log out from your new account and click the ACCOUNT link at the top of any SETI@home page. Then click "forgot email address?" and follow the instructions under "2) If you forgot your account's email address, or you can't receive email there."

Gruß,

SETI may not deliberately delete accounts but accidents happen.

I've already tried the website methods, including e-mail and account id, which way back when was how you logged in.

However, the account must have been deleted somehow, even if by glitch, for two reasons:

1) It has been in my BOINC managers for years without any problems until January. At that point all 3 managers on all 3 computers have stopped being able to communicate, and if I ask the manager to go to my account, each one gets told that no such account exists.

2) The account no longer appears on my list of projects as given by BOINC for my details for the other projects I belong.

I wonder if someone hijacked your account.

But your Manager is still running on your computer? If it does, it shows your nick name next to the project.

I suppose a hijack is possible, but wouldn't the account id still be valid even if all the user data had been altered?

I checked the nick in the managers and it is blank for the SETI project now.

In your BOINC Data directory, the path to which is in the first few messages after a restart of BOINC. Note that there is a hidden directory in this path. If you have not found client_state.xml with a current date, you have not found the data directory.

In this directory you will find a file named account_setiathome.ssl.berkeley.edu.xml. In this you will find a tag <authenticator>XXXXXXXXXXXXXX</authenticator>

Try using whatever XXXXXXXXXXXXXX is on the alternate login with authenticator. If this fails, then your account has been destroyed somehow (remember that we have had a few DB failures).

Please DO NOT post your authenticator here or anywhere else. It is the key to your account.

I also lost my account.

I have been participating in SETI@Home for about 10 years. First on the original system for 3 or 4 years.

When I changed to another ISP, I lost thousands of hours and W.U.s. Gone. This present Polywell computer has been running S@H 24/7 for 5 or 6 years. I know it's old, but just bought a new laptop for work and can't afford another ccomputer for S@H.

Yesterday a techie cleaned it all out and deleted my BOINC Manager and all my S@H files and the units that were running. Can't find 'em anywhere. A few minutes ago I downloaded BOINC and S@H but the new downloads are not in my program files, or startup files or anywhere they should be. I had to do a "search" to see them on the C: drive, but they won't open. I don't see a BOINC Data Directory anywhere.

I have almost 250,000 WUs or credits or whatever they're called nowadays, and would prefer not to lose them.

Any help in recovering my S@H?

Thanks.

Obviously not, since you posted from your account, created in 2005.

Why would you want to buy a new one if the current one is still working?

Did you ever try the "Special instructions For SETI@home Classic participants" on the SETI homepage to retrieve your classic score?

Yesterday a techie cleaned it all out and deleted my BOINC Manager and all my S@H files and the units that were running. Can't find 'em anywhere. A few minutes ago I downloaded BOINC and S@H but the new downloads are not in my program files, or startup files or anywhere they should be. I had to do a "search" to see them on the C: drive, but they won't open. I don't see a BOINC Data Directory anywhere.

Where on the C: drive did you find them? If direct on C:\, you have made an error while installing. Please tell us what you tried.

Gruß,
Gundolf

Even if you throw your computer in the ocean you will not lose your credits -
the credits are in your account on SETI servers.

As all of us can see you have now:
Total credit 247,207
Recent average credit 166.06

On a new computer/new HDD/new OS:
Install BOINC
Attach to your account using correct e-mail address (the one that is defined in your account no matter is it still valid or not)

You will see in BOINC Manager all of your credits

"When I changed to another ISP, I lost thousands of hours and W.U.s. Gone.":
Credits do not depend in any way by ISP - they do not vanish if you change ISP, town, country or even if you do not have computer at all.
Go to a friend's computer, start a browser, go to SETI@home site, enter your account - and you will see your credits

P.S.
You are using very old BOINC version 5.8.8
(Download new, Exit BOINC and just install the new - no need to uninstall; you will lose nothing)

If you want to stay on v5.xx get 5.10.45
or get 6.6.38, 6.10.18 or 6.10.43(beta)

All BOINC versions

Some BOINC versions

Yay! I got it back. Took your advice and downoaded 6.03 snf it's working.

This is a Polywell computer with an Athlon processor. It has been very reliable and stable running 24/7/365 for the past 5 years. I'm afraid it's gonna giv up the ghost at any moment. I have replaced one power supply and several fans over the years. The main problem is when the Polywell guys partitioned the C: drive, they only made it 20 GB in size, not big enough to run all my stuff. The D: partition is 59GB.

I have an external Iomege 300 GB drive, but when I tried to do a backup, I can't open any of the files. I wish I were more computer-savy.

The special instructions for classic users say there is no account for my previous email address, which was sgaber@iglide.net. That company (iglide) is out of business, I think.

Hey, I just remembered my email address even before that one. I'll try it and see.

Thanks for your help.

Just don't install programs to
C:\Program Files\

And don't save documents, .MP3, .jpg, .AVI to
My Documents
My Pictures
...

Make (by hand):
D:\Programs.Steve
and install programs/games there

Make (by hand):
D:\Documents.Steve
and subfolders
Doc
Films
Music
Pic
...etc...

and move/download your stuff there
