I'm transfering everything from my old PC (P4, 1.2GHz) to my new one (P4, 3.5GHz, both are HPs). I'm fairly clear on copying over the data directory (and how to find it). But one thing I noted over on the BOINC forums is something about the new computer being recognized as a "new (or "different")" computer and that my old stats and credits will not transfer except if I engage in a cumbersome process of convincing the servers to apply the old comp's stats and credits to the new one. I'm not clear about that. It's not that I'm shooting for a record. I'd just like to be able to trace all the way back to when I first started using S@H. Can I convince the SETI (and BOINC) servers that all my stats and credits are to be applied to the new comp? Something about changing the IDs in the XML files? Hope you can answer quickly. I'm almost through my first vodka w/Citronge. Thanks. Artificial intelligence is no match for genuine stupidity. |

So long as you copy the entire Data directory (the program directory might also be necessary), you should have no problems. I've been doing this on my main machine for quite a few years now, and as you can see my stats have remained that the host was created in 2004 despite having Windows 7 on it. |

The project will probably show a second computer, but you will be getting the credits for both. You really don't need to worry about it. If the computers have the same name, you should be able to join them by name if the old computer does not contact the server after the new server has made its first contact. BOINC WIKI |

OK. Thank you both for your tips and assurances. CK Artificial intelligence is no match for genuine stupidity. |

I have a problem too.. Just had to reinstall my system due to a crash so I didn't have anything copied (and didn't know you had to).. So I logged onto BAM! and I got in and my password and name were correct.. Problem is that when I attempted a dozen times on the software it says that my name or password is wrong.. GGGrrrr... No idea what to do.. Blessings and May Your Path Be Smooth, *~~~Jules~~~* |

Obviously, you could log into your account, but there are no computers attached to it. You have to decide if you want to do that with BAM! (a site external to SETI and BOINC) or with the BOINC manager. Please tell. Gruß, Gundolf [edit]It's past midnight here. If you have a BAM account, you should add your computer the BAM and control it that way. Once that is done, you will get a file called account_[project url goes here - no brackets].xml that contains an authenticator tag. The contents between the authenticator start and end tags can be used as an alternative logon to your SETI account. BOINC WIKI |

Could the software be redesigned so that instead of going through a process to pick up where you left off all the progress is stored on the SETI@home network. Then if a re-install, or transfer to a new computer, is needed then just have to log in and request a download that would reload everything and then keep going. This could be programmed to be a 1 click process from the user point of view. David Killawee |

The Seti@Home network is stressed to the max already as it is. It won't be able to take the extra stress of downloading everyone's settings and progress. Plus as you may have noticed, it's down for days at times as well, meaning that during all those days you wouldn't be able to do anything. The BOINC software (which would have to be redesigned to do what you ask for) is designed to overcome outages and such by giving you the chance to store lots of work and to attach to other projects as well. It's not a manager solely for Seti. If your plan were to be implemented, it would have to do this for other projects as well, including big ones like ClimatePrediction.net where models run into the multiple hundreds of megabytes big. You really want all projects to have super-highway internet connections to be able to do what you want then? That is then going against the design idea of BOINC being an option to run science on a shoestring budget. |
