Message 981657 - Posted: 20 Mar 2010, 15:01:14 UTC

Did a little looking around (I'm sure the answer is out there) but can't find it.

Any clues?

This is the machine in question.

It has a second GTX 285 installed but doesn't show up in BOINC. I am only running SETI stock apps. It did show up at one time while I had this box running Windows Home Server but I've since switched it over to Windows 7 for 64 bit.

The drivers show up as working correctly in the Device Manager.

Thanks for any assistance.

Regards,

Do you have anything plugged into the card? A second monitor or dummy plug may be needed. Also, have you tried extending the desktop to the second card? I've seen it happen a couple of times where Windows can see a device fine but Boinc can't. For me, a dummy plug did the trick.

Thanks Dave....that is what I was trying to remember seeing as advice for this. At the moment the second card does not have anything plugged into it. The desktop is not extended to it either. No sli of course as well.

I'll give that a try.

Regards,

With 2 cards I plugged a second monitor in and did a restart and was able to disconnect 2nd monitor and didn't need it again. May give that a try if you have one to try. Once I put 3 in I needed dummy plugs or Boinc only sees 2 cards.

Has <use_all_GPUs> in the cc_config.xml file survived the transition? :-)

Same problem on my XP64 host, plugged in a second (GTS250) nVidia card, a 9800GTX+, is already on the system, BOINC 6.10.17. does see the 'newer'G92 (GTS250) and uses it, but doesn't use the 9800GTX, anymore.
Plugged in a monitor and extended the desktop, which did the job.
Unplugged the monitor, but first, had to add a cc_config.xml, with <use_all_GPUs>1</use_all_GPUs> as option. And some log_flags.
Now it (sometimes) run's 4 CPU CPDN WU's and 2 (0.04-0.24)CPU+GPU GPU-Grid or SETI or Einstein !?

It made me wander why, it does run, these 2 (Not New) Projects, regardless of BOINC and WEB/Account, resource share!
Has to be a debt-issue, cause I crunched both projects before. CPDN & GPUGrid.

Received a load (~700) WU's from SETI, but they're still waiting to run. Nicely devided on 3 Quadies.

Of which, 1 is 'stuck' with 100 (!) Docking WU's, 4 running and 96 pausing.
The other mentioned above, 1, actually runs SETI and Collatz C. and always reaches it's limit of 150WU's a day, after 6 hours, so enough time left for SETI- WU's.

How odd. I did as Dave suggests above and plugged in a second monitor and voila up came the second GTX 285. So, being a curious fellow I unplugged it and rebooted. Up comes both GTXs again, as they once did.

What's up with that? Why does it need a second monitor plugged into it for a boot and then it's fine again?

It depends on what is left in the registry. After a simple reboot there is still enough left there in the registry to use both GPU's, but after something like a driver update the registry probably gets cleared of cruft relating to the old driver and you have to do it again.

Just guessing.

Hmmm... one for two. My laptop now suddenly decided to drop one of its two Nvidia cards. Device Manager says everything is there and working properly.

Stopped BOINC, attached an external monitor and restarted BOINC. Nada.

Rebooted and checked again....BIG NADA!

This is annoying especially as on the laptop it now has too many units to complete on time. It coughed up a bunch not completed by the deadline before I noticed this was going on (and why is BOINC scheduling things due in April when stuff in March isn't done yet?!).

I'm going to revert to earlier drivers next to see if this clears up. I did go on a "let's get these up to date" inadvisedly across the three machines crunching.

Next update when I've pushed everything backwards - look forward to hearing from anyone else not getting this to work properly as well.

Regards,

When you attached the external monitor, did you extend the desktop (in the Nvidia control panel) across the 2 desktops?

I've seen Device Manager say the same about a blown audio card... but it really wouldn't work. Windows would find it, install its own drivers (the drivers from the manufacturer refused to install -> clue), it would get an interrupt and a memory address, but giving sound? Nuhuh. ;-)

Same with two network Interface Cards.

So I wouldn't take everything Device Manager says for truth. :-)

I have fixed, built, and tuned computers for years, and it is strange to say that for a hobby of solving math problems very fast, it is actually necessary to back-date a driver, and use on older OS. When I return a computer to someone, it has every driver, patch, and required software installed. The drive is defragged, and all virus, spyware, updates, and defrag happen every Thursday night into Friday morning. It is just interesting that to get maximum performance, you need to use older software revisions.

Sorry for the double post. It seemed like it didn't go through the first time, so I pushed the button again.

Yep, your right. I still learning. Other than very sporadic contact with National Instruments message boards, these are the first message boards I have ever used. It's easy to read the posts, but it takes some experimenting to get the hang of this.

You should still be able to edit the duplicate to replace the text there with the apology?

I did. Even opened Explorer on the external monitor just to give it some exercise. Nada.

I've pushed back the driver now as well. Also nada.

There goes that theory.

Sage advice. Once you are on Windows, everything is relative.

Only somewhat. I deal more with business apps personally but in that arena you are always working with a collection of sometimes competing requirements.

Speed on a driver is paramount but I can see some code jockey doing a trade-off between uber speed and fixing some other thing that needs gobs of cycles. In a sense he sees it as "his" cycles to be applied to the greater "problem" since it looms bigger in his radar for fixing.

We on the other hand look at the "problem" and shrug (probably something for some board manufacturer or bios that we couldn't give a rat's ass about) and go with the older driver because it doesn't reflect the compromise.

Regards
