In 1956 the Cuban rebel leader Fidel Castro returned from Mexico with 81 armed men, including his Argentine-born communist supporter Ernesto "Che" Guevara and began to wage guerrilla warfare against the forces of dictator Fulgencio Batista.

The trouble was the normal pop tunes on the Small vinyl records were chewed up by the needle and the weight of the trumpet.

I am not sure if this is the same tune as my very first pop tune purchase. But it was an extended play vinyl titled "Dynamite", bought around 1953 and played until it wore out.

That is a wind up 78rpm record player. Well I say 78 .....

"In America in 1900, the two leading manufacturers of flat records were Columbia, which used 80 rpm as its speed, and Victor, which used 76 rpm. Since one company's records were playable on the other's machines, it is only logical that the eventual standard speed would be in the middle.

By 1925, the speed of the record became standardised at a nominal value of 78 rpm. However, the standard was to differ between America and the rest of the world. The actual 78 speed in America was 78.26 rpm, being the speed of 3600 rpm synchronous motor (run from 60 Hz supply) reduced by 46:1 gearing. Throughout the rest of the world, 77.92 rpm was adopted being the speed of a 3000 rpm synchronous motor powered by a 50 Hz supply and reduced by 38.5:1 gearing."

The trouble was the normal pop tunes on the Small vinyl records were chewed up by the needle and the weight of the trumpet.

The Dansettes had a two-sided cartridge with a 78 stylus on one side and an LP one on the other. You couldn't play 45 rpm records with the 78rpm needle, it was too big for the small grooves!

But it was an extended play vinyl

They were the 45 rpm EP's and the long players were the 33 1/3 rpm LP's. Although as I recall my Dansette had a 16 rpm setting. I never knew why as I have never seen a 16 rpm record. Although I believe some were made for extra length speech recording only, that speed being too slow for music.

Ah yes Dan, those were the single play ones, we had them in the UK as well. The thing with the more advanced Dansette was it had a stabilising arm and a multi-play mechanism called an "autochanger". You could stack 10 x 45's at a time.

Of course the big secret was that if you moved the stabilsing arm over to one side, put on an LP, it would replay it over and over again. Great for a smooochy party!

My mom and dad would never have given me an advanced model when i was 3...But they did get me that one hoping to satisfy my need to play with record players...And hopefully keeping me from playing with their record player...or the fancy record players my grandparents owned...It was futile...I had mastered the operation of all record players before i was 5...No matter how hi-tech they were...

Hi Dan,

Oh, I make an appearance every day. I just don't spend enough time to post or reply.

That post just begged for someone to respond to it.

I'm doing a lot of research on the build of my new i7 SETI cruncher. Above the 600 already spent, I have to spend another 2 and 1/4. This will be my best build yet! :) It'll probably be another week or 2 before I can begin the build.

Keep on BOINCing...! :)
