I never had a chance to see the Classic SETI screen saver in action (only screen-shots - still images)
I wonder is there a place I can get the Classic screen saver + some test workunits to "boldly go and see what only the old participants had ever seen" :)

Emulate the bugger. :-)
In your Project preferences, edit preferences.
Choose Graphics preferences to be Custom
Save preferences.
Edit preferences again, then the new options are open.
Set everything with oscillation in the name to zero.
Save preferences.
Update BOINC.
This will require that you run the stock Seti application, or an optimized application with graphics capabilities.

I did this (oscillation = 0) Looooong ago ....
But I want to see how the original really looked in action
No one keeps the old files (from before 2005)?

After hard searching (many dead links - year 2000) I found Classic SETI -
SETI@Home Windows Client - Version 3.03 - December 2000 (setiathome_win_3_03.exe)
Direct link:
http://setiathome.free.fr/pub/setiathome_win_3_03.exe
Description

Now I need work_unit.sah in the format from "old" times.
Somebody keep old backups? (on my computers I have some files (GIFs, Sokoban, PE2, ...) since early 1980's)

Sorry, no WUs, but after reading your post, I found a setiathome_win_3_08.exe on my old laptop.
I still have the disk of the (even older) laptop that used to run SETI classic, but I'm (currently) not in the mood for tinkering with hardware to get it running again.

So you searched your disk for setiathome_win_ and found setiathome_win_3_08.exe
When you are in a mood for more searching try to find the files in the install directory.
By default the directory is
C:\Program Files\SETI@home\
The files:
SETI@home.exe
greendis.ico
header.bmp
setihom8.bmp
key.sah
work_unit.txt (for pre-v3.03 classic SETI@home)
work_unit.sah (for v3.03+, not in slots)
(and some more with common names like Release_Notes.txt)
I often use Total Commander to search for old forgotten files as it can search file names "hidden" in archives.

Yes, the directory is still there, but as I said in my previous post, alas, no work_unit.* files left.

If you ever transfered WUs from one computer to another you may have something left on your "buffer" diskette, but of course it is hard to find after so many years ...

I managed to find Classic SETI work_unit.sah (work_unit.zip):
http://www.seti.nl/downloads/
http://www.seti.nl/downloads/work_unit.zip
I used WU2WAV to check that work_unit.sah is good Classic SETI WU (looking in the file it seem good)
http://gamma.nic.fi/~jknutar/wu2wav/
http://netti.nic.fi/~jknutar/wu2wav/
The work_unit.WAV was successfully created from work_unit.sah and sounds like static (noise).
( Look also the funny SIC@HOME - Search for incredible coincidence at home :)
http://gamma.nic.fi/~sic/
)
I put work_unit.sah to SETI@home directory, started SETI@home.exe but it wants to create/attach to account.
I think I need some (fake) user_info.sah so I searched and found this forum post #4

I created user_info.sah with the above contents but SETI@home.exe still wants to create/attach to account.
( This post is similar:

)
(Am I near the end of the road or am I on a wrong way?)
Do you know how to force SETI@home.exe to just start crunching and not attempt to attach to account?

I found 2 more user_info.sah but they do not work either

Finally I managed to make the Classic SETI run!
Save this file directly - do NOT copy/paste to Notepad!
http://www.oldurn.com/seti@home/user_info.sah
The problem was that lines in user_info.sah
have to be delimited by LF (LineFeed - Hex 0A) only
- NOT the usual CR/LF (CarriageReturn LineFeed - Hex 0D 0A)
Later I will post the full package ...

See the Classic SETI in action
http://mail.dir.bg/~bil/SETI@home__Classic_SETI_for_fun__--BilBg--.rar
Save the .rar
Extract to empty directory
Run SETI@home.exe
(even if you know how it looked 10 years ago see how faster are today's computers)

Rename 9291b3902cd6cd79fb7f1bfe921e274c.png to SETI@home__Classic_SETI_for_fun__--BilBg--.rar

Listen to the "Classic" sound of space
Go to wu2wav directory
Run wu2wav.exe
Play the generated work_unit.wav

That was very resourceful! Nice job it getting it to work again. I used to love just watching that. It was like looking at a fish tank. You knew what it was going to do, but you couldn't stop watching it.

Personally I never used the screen saver. This was back on a Celeron 600 way back near my join date. The very first WU was done with the screen saver enabled and clocked an amazing 117 hours. Through some kind of accident, I discovered that not using the screen saver yielded about 14 hours instead. Never used the screen saver again.
Watching the FFTs be processed in the main application was fun for brief periods of time, then it was back to the everyday tasks.
I still have the installers for a handful of 3.0 builds, and SetiSpy (including 11,000 GIFs of the gaussians that were found, and 1.3MB of csv log files for the WUs that were processed). Fun times.

Nice job!
Of course, the real enthusiasts soon found that the graphical client was a bad idea and switched to the pure text client. The problem was that the graphics took far more CPU time than the workunit.
This is usually much less of a problem with the BOINC screensaver because it uses modern technologies to render the graphics (though it still takes some CPU, obviously). GPU crunchers would be the exception - though I'm not sure that's even possible.
