OMG, shock, horror - Martin, don't you go having a heart attack. That will also stream the files over your network to devices that can play off of a network media server. I use ps3mediaserver for serving up video to my houses devices, but have heard decent things about xbmc, and I know it can even be used on linux. :-) #resist |

Yep, & you can also use it with openELEC 2.0 to build a dedicated media server without the need for a full blown O/S (Linux based of course). ATM, they seem to be having issues with their repository with some apps boken(but only for Frodo 12 - Eden 11.0 is stable). |

There's the rather interesting Raspbmc that turns a RasPi into a low power but very capable XBMC media centre. ...And you can even run Boinc on the RasPi! All by the power of Linux! This could rightly be posted in any of the 3 threads regarding software & technolgy, but thought the Linux thread would be more appropriate. For the past several weeks, Real Player, downloader & convertor have all stopped working under Windows. On searching for answers on this, find that many are having the same issue. For some, it was a simple matter of enabling the add-on in their browsers, but for the tech savvy who are aware of that, their's is still not working. On checking with Real, there is a version for Linux, so if there is anyone using this in Linux, does all 3 components of the program work? |

Ubuntu operating system comes to Android smartphones Thanks for that, quite a splash: ... Ubuntu [Linux] ... devices to be sold with the system pre-installed within the year. While he acknowledged the innovation would likely be limited to "enthusiasts and hobbyists" at first, he said it signalled a wider shift on the horizon. "It's quite incredible that we're at this point when the power of the phone is crossing over that with baseline processing power of basic laptops," Mr Shuttleworth told the BBC. "We're taking advantage of that so for the first time in history you have the full consumer PC platform available on a phone. ... "... It's really cracking to do that ahead of everyone else." Phones running the software will be showcased at the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in Las Vegas next week. ... There's also great enthusiasm from: The Register: Ubuntu for smartphones aims to replace today's mobes, laptops PCMAG: Canonical Unveils Ubuntu for Smartphones There is also the Google phone... And now for something completely different. By switching from Windows to its own Linux distribution, LiMux, Munich has saved over ¬11 million (US$14.3 million) so far, the city announced in November. But a Microsoft-commissioned Total Cost of Ownership (TCO) study conducted by HP suggests that the city's numbers are wrong, and claims that Munich would have saved ¬43.7 million if it had stuck with Microsoft, German weekly Focus reported earlier this week. Microsoft won't release study that challenged success of Munich's Linux migration #resist |

And now for something completely different. Thanks for that one. I like the quote from the source article: ... Since the report was commissioned by Microsoft, HP also declined to comment, said Anette Nachbar, spokeswoman for HP. "I would struggle to see how a Windows deployment would be cheaper than a Linux installment," said Roy Illsley, principal analyst at Ovum, who added that he couldn't imagine why Microsoft wouldn't release a study that actually proved that Microsoft is cheaper than Linux. "I would suspect that they read it and they suspected that there are some errors in there," he said. ... Might they be playing a game of dirty tricks?... IT is what we make it... Might they be playing a game of dirty tricks?... The study was commissioned by Microsoft to HP Consulting for internal purposes only What dirty trick? Never was released except by a disgruntled employee. |

Might they be playing a game of dirty tricks?... So the FUD headlines are just a ruse by sensationalist publishers? Or really is that FUD being slung around to try to confuse and discredit a big success story for FLOSS and real standards? YOUR source for the "disgruntled employee" is...? So how did that story get out into the wild?... That all looks all the worst against the excessive costs and restrictions of proprietary and lock-in... IT is what we make it... An interesting development and lead in to a whole new series of mobile phones: First Firefox phones revealed by Mozilla and Geeksphone Mozilla has published details of the first smartphones to be powered by its Firefox operating system. Two handsets are to be made by a small Spanish firm called Geeksphone and will be targeted at developers ahead of the system's formal launch. The platform is based on the HTML5 web programming language and is being marketed as offering software writers more "freedom"... IT is what we make it... YOUR source for the "disgruntled employee" is...? So how did that story get out into the wild?... Just clicked to "read full story" on the link in Ex's post which leads to http://www.itworld.com/open-source/337658/microsoft-wont-release-study-challenged-success-munichs-linux-migration You have to watch out for sensationalist media FUD. Expect it. It is how they sell advertising. |

YOUR source for the "disgruntled employee" is...? So how did that story get out into the wild?... Including deliberate deception? Microsoft partly releases study on Munich's Linux migration ... The likely reason for this is an assumption by HP that Munich's administration would still be using Windows XP and Office 2003 if Munich had decided to go with Microsoft products; Munich's calculations, on the other hand, include an upgrade to Windows 7. As the head of the City of Munich's municipal IT service IT@M, Karl-Heinz Schneider, pointed out last week, the Linux version used with LiMux has continually evolved and is now comparable to Windows 7. It is rather unrealistic to assume that the city would have stayed on Windows XP throughout the lifetime of the migration, instead of updating to a current version of Microsoft's operating system at some point. The [Microsoft/HP] study contains other debatable assumptions... All spiced up with drip-fed teasers to get just the glib misleading FUD headline out into the wild?... All scurrilously dishonest in my opinion! IT is what we make it... Martin See new freedom: Mageia Linux Take a look for yourself: Linux Format The Future is what We all make IT (GPLv3) |

Martin, Can't you read? Questioning the City of Munich's figures by quoting a non-public study that could not be verified has sparked considerable criticism. Most likely it is in response to this that Microsoft has now released a summary of the study. That is exactly with the disgruntled one wanted. Release of internal documents to embarrass. What might matter is what they did with the damn thing. Just file it as claptrap? |

... What might matter is what they did with the damn thing. Just file it as claptrap? So... Why pay to create a report that is so blatantly (deliberately?) deceitfully biased in the first place if it is not to be used in some way...? Or are you suggesting that the Microsoft/HP people are hopelessly incompetent? Or just that they had no other way to cook the numbers to try to get Microsoft to look good?... All very strange to my eyes... All just my opinion as always... ;-) IT is what we make it... ... What might matter is what they did with the damn thing. Just file it as claptrap? Ah, you asked why. Some incompetent marketing type trying to do a CYA as to why he lost a contract? Some incompetent middle marketing type ordered to never lose another contract who orders up BS which might be massaged into sales presentations? Who cares. If it wasn't supposed to go outside their doors then someone up high put a kibosh on it. Crap like that happens all the time in big companies. |

Is this really Microsoft moving towards world standards and FLOSS? From rabid screams of "Cancer" to a fond embrace? Or a poisonous kiss of death?... Or...? Microsoft: Old Internet Explorer is terrible and 'we want to help' As every web developer knows, one of the biggest headaches of building modern, standards-compliant web pages is getting them to look and work right in Internet Explorer. Well, coders, apparently Microsoft feels your pain, because it has released a new set of free tools to help you do just that... Microsoft dev tools to add Linux-style source code versioning Microsoft's developer tools division has taken another step closer to the open source community, with the announcement that both Team Foundation Server and Visual Studio will soon incorporate support for decentralized source code version control using Git. ... ... Originally invented by Linus Torvalds to help him manage Linux kernel development, Git quickly gained a strong following, in part thanks to the popular free source code-hosting site, GitHub. Harry says Microsoft made the decision to add DVCS support to Team Foundation Server more than a year ago, and that it didn't take long to settle on support for Git as the right way to go. ... ... Harry stressed that Microsoft's decision to get aboard the Git train in no way constituted an attack on open source, and that Redmond's implementation of Git would be fully compatible with any existing Git repositories or tools. "This is not about lock in – It's about providing a good and interoperable Git capability,"... Here's a beautifully good example of how FLOSS works very well, even despite a very topsy-turvy journalistic article: When open-source eats itself, we win ... In some markets, open source rules the roost. For example, Drupal, Joomla, my old company Alfresco and other open-source content management systems regularly duke it out for supremacy... ... But web servers? That's a market that Apache won ages ago, with no open-source competition to speak of. That is, until recently. ... There's some rather good apt comments in the comments to all that: What a refreshing change. "fighting for market supremacy in the only way open source really knows how: technical merit" Makes a change from all that bloody litigation that's going on. And: Re: What a refeshing change. "Because both have to appeal to developers, and developers have a low tolerance for marketing speak." Oh so true. Which is yet more proof that FOSS is a good idea (TM).
