I attempted to upgrade to the current version from 6.10.18 and received the following message and have never received it before.

Download it again. The message means that it's not completely in, Windows isn't recognizing it. Preferably download it to a different directory. Cleaning out your temporary internet files may also help. Do make sure to delete the old downloaded installer.

Downloaded again and the installation was successfull. It seems that the BOINCTRAY.EXE was still running after stopping the application prior to the originial download. THANKS!!!!

Which doesn't matter much for downloading or installing a new BOINC.

Boinctray.exe is the BOINC idle tracking program for Windows Vista and Windows 7 for when BOINC is installed as a service.

The installer will kill the running of the present version then delete its program (along with all other Boinc executables), then install the new one (but not start the new one, that's only done on a reboot as it starts from the registry).

The error message you got was one from Windows, that it couldn't even start the installer. Usually due to a little corruption of the installer file. It may have looked like it was all in, but even missing a couple of bytes means that the program isn't working.

I've noticed that downloads from Boinc seem to get currupted often. It's happened on most of the last half dozen (Alpha version) updates I've made. I usually just do an overwrite when I re-download it.

The problem with that is that when you do that with IE, it will just get the already downloaded one from the temporary internet files folder, instead of really downloading it again.

When you have the problem with multiple versions, first thing to check is the internet connection/cable/NIC. You may be dropping packets.

I've had the same D/L problems with both my slow DSL and fast cable. It is the only site that drops downloads randomly mid-stream. It usually works the second time around.

I often download files 10-20 time the size of the Boinc installer with no problems.

The file is always truncated and usually rather small (under 3 Megs) so the cached version doesn't come into play. I've gotten into the habit of checking the file size before running it.
