Message 39139 - Posted: 22 Oct 2004, 13:30:29 UTC

Since the introduction of Boinc 4.05 my PCs need 50% more time to finish a WU. When the software downloads the WUs to be processed, it still uses the "old" time needed with Boinc 4.02 to evaluate how many WUs to download to keep the queue filled.

The problem is that now my 3 machines are working on WUs which are "past" (they should have been sent back 1 to 3 days ago), and there are many such WUs on each machine. Thus, my PC are working with no profit for nobody (I assume the result, when sent back, will be discarded, and no credit will be given).

Questions:

1) How can I free the queue from those overdue WUs?
2) How can I ensure that new WUs downloaded can be processed within the time frame assigned?

Thanks for any help.

1) How can I free the queue from those overdue WUs?

You can do this by using the "Reset" function. More explanation is available here.

2) How can I ensure that new WUs downloaded can be processed within the time frame assigned?

You can simply set the "Connect to network about every" in your preferences to a low level, like 1 or 2 days and then see how much WU's are downloaded. Once you got the WU's, you can readjust the value in your preferences to a higher level.

Hi Thierry,

thanks for your help, and the usefull link.

I have followed both advises, and all seems well.

Do you know if the programmers at Berkeley will "solve" the problem with the computation time of version 4.05? Another thing which happens is that the CPU continues working from 30 minutes to 1 hour after having reached the 100%...

I too have many WUs that will expire on Saturday 10/23 or Sunday 10/24; there is no way I am going to complete them on time. Since what the Boinc server will do is send out the overdue WUs to someone else to be processed, I am wondering what happens to WUs that are completed late, i.e., whilist the Boinc server is still waiting for the third result to come in. Does the server use it?

Nino, would you go to your account, in the computers/results section, and see what happened to the WUs you returned late? Did you get credit? In the alternative, would someone answer who has athoritative knowledge of what the server does with overdue WUs?

Hi C Elliot,

sorry, I am not able to identify the results which I sent late. I have "reset" the project, and all the overdue WUs have disappeared from the local machine, and new fresh ones have been downloaded.

If I go to the "Result" section of my account, there are too many pages to view. Further, I have 5 machines working, and in the result pages there is no clue about which machine got which unit. I should click on the "Detail" of each single result in order to see which machine got it (and this is V E R Y boring, I tell you).

I have no idea if the server does indeed use a good late result. I suggest to you to "reset" the project, so that you get new WUs which you can complete within the planned time frame.

Have a good week-end, real life is out there waiting for us.

Yes, the overdue result will get credit, and the replacement will get credit as well (at least it used to work this way, I haven't checked in a couple of months). The overdue result needs to be returned before the verifier starts the verification of the replacement.

I've found that you will generally get credit for results that are returned up to 2-4 days late. Results returned after that are very unlikely to get any credit.

Nino, thanks for your reply.
You could go to your account/"View Computers"/Some Computer ID/"Results" and see all the results for one computer. But you are right, viewing these pages is V E R Y boring! It does not matter; another user says that the Boinc server will accept overdue WUs for a days. Some of my WUs will be overdue at 12:40 PM today, and there are only three of them; I will just wait until about 5:00 and see if the server took one WU. Thanks again.
