Thank you all for your replies and your stories about your pets too. It's always hard when that time comes, since most people who have pets don't think of them as pets but like family. I went ahead and uninstalled / reinstalled the app and will just keep it active in my taskbar, and hopefully it will connect. But I need to go. It's 2:30am here, and the words on the screen no longer make any sense :) LOL

The meowing and the clawing on my arm of my dear Squirrel kitty don't make sense sometimes either........ but I love her so much all the same.

She loves me. I love her. And as such, I have a commitment to her for life........her life. Come bad or good. I take this on whenever I take a new kitty into my home.

They trust me with their lives.........would you not have others do the same for you?

Since we seem to have some new folk in this thread:

Welcome to SETI, BOINC, and the Forums. I have met a lot of intersting people here, and I like most of them. Even the ones I don't like can be intertaining some times.

Since you are discovering that SETI (like all BOINC projects) can come and go, you should consider attaching one or more extra projects, to fill in the blanks.

The BOINC home page can show you the projects available, click on the hot link "projects available". They mostly have some background information on their home pages, and they mostly have Forums like these. SETI seems to have the most active and entertaining Forums, probably because it has been around so long.

Give some of the other projects a try, and let us know how it goes.

I've actually been participating in this ever since SETI was launched. Problem is, is the username/account which I initially signed up with was hacked, so am having to start over. But tis ok. :) I'll see about trying other projects at some point.

The picture actually fits a 22.5" monitor. I scaled it down to fit as an avatar. I did have one of this breed. Genesis. I miss her dearly. She passed away from a rattlesnake bite to the top of her head. What made it all the worse, is I didn't know it. My family and I were on a week-long vacation when that happened. She hung on in agony for 5 days till I returned. Then she died in my arms.

We never forget the ones we've lost.

Chantal was beautiful. Seal Point Siamese, small, slender, graceful and very smart.

I waited almost six months before I got another cat. Molly is Seal Point (and beautiful) -- otherwise the opposite of Chantal.

She'll be twelve in April.

Yeah, Do I ever know that, Angel in Her last days couldn't see where to put the sand in the box and couldn't bury Her stuff, Sometimes She did manage to bury It halfway, but She'd still run from the box meowing in fright and so She'd dump elsewhere like on the carpet or wherever It didn't have a fresh stink, She relied on memory and when I went to bed She'd cry out for Me wondering where I was, Plus Her problem internally wasn't getting any better and so I had to make a decision, Do I try and save Her or end It as Her care could have put Me in jeopardy as other things(My car) are crying out for attention and Her getting like this was just really bad timing, She'd also made a big stink on the way to the vet, She'd never done that before, much. So far It's been like It was before 1990 when I didn't have any cats.

We have a feral colony near our house. We feed them and try to tame as many as we can. We try to bring in the kittens and have them fixed so we can adopt them out to good homes. It nearly broke our hearts when one young mother brought us a dead kitten. Something had found her nest and killed all her kittens before they were old enough for her to bring them in to us. I guess she was hoping we could do something for it.

We also took in a beautiful calico that a neighbor abandoned when they moved. We found out when we took her to the vet for a check up that she had Feline Leukemia. The vet told us she had no idea how long she could live. Since she had lead such a hard life, we brought her home and she stayed with us for about six months or so before she passed. She seemed to go peacefully and with love. She died in my lap while I was petting her.

Message 972200 - Posted: 20 Feb 2010, 12:02:12 UTC

I've been downstairs all day and have left my BOINC manager running. I just now saw these messages:

2/20/2010 2:27:02 AM
SETI@home
Message from server: No work is available for Astropulse v5

2/20/2010 2:27:02 AM
SETI@home
Message from server: Your computer has no NVIDIA GPU

Can anyone elaborate? Here's the way my preferences are, just in case it might be the way their set up:

Use at most: 1gig of space
Use at most: 1gig of total space
Task checkpoint to disc: every 30 seconds
Use at most: 1% of page file (swap space)
Use at most: 1% when computer is in use
Use at most: 1% when computer is idle
Leave applications in memory while suspended: checked
Max download rate: 976.56 Kb's
Max upload rate: 0.98 kb's

Thanks
Tas

It's an Informatioal message basically saying it can't supply Setiathame_enhanced work because you don't have a Nvidia GPU.

Can anyone elaborate? Here's the way my preferences are, just in case it might be the way their set up:

The Computing Preferences don't influence what work you get, but the Seti Project Preferences do,
to get a chance of receiving Astropulse_v505 Wu's since there's no switch for it, you need to set the project prefernces to the following:

Run only the selected applications SETI@home Enhanced: no
Astropulse: yes
Astropulse v5: yes

If no work for selected applications is available, accept work from other applications? yes

Boinc will ask for Astropulse and Astropulse_v505 work, but since there isn't any, you'll be sent Setiathome_enhanced and Astropulse_v505 work instead. (subject to the project being fully up, and there being Astropulse_v505 work available)

And to add to what Claggy said: SETI@home has no way of supplying work to make use of your CAL ATI Radeon HD 4700/4800 GPU yet.

Well, somebody's working today: whole new raft of tapes have been loaded for splitting, and AP is going out again.

And I think that's the _only_ reason for the spike in the traffic graph....

How/where do I find these options at? I opened the BOINC manager and under options and under preferences, there is nothing that says this...

There seems to be a problem with connecting to Seti. In the Project Window any attempt to update fails and in the Project Window there is a file that has uploaded to 56.29% and then failed. All attempts to retry also fail.

Tas,

Two things, when you altered your Setiathome Project Preferences, it seems by default, your computer got hidden, can you go and allow your computer to be seen again please,
it will take a couple of hours for your computer to be seen again.
Second thing is i looked at your Computing Preferences you posted earlier, they seem a bit extreme, you'll be lucky to get any work done with Memory use set at 1%,
can't see your computer to see how much memory it has!, the Setiathome home app shoudn't interfer with any other program as it runs at Idle Priority, and each CPU app requires about 40Mb,
even if the Memory settings are set at a highish value, it shouldn't need any more, (as long as you haven't got Multiple Wu's started and not completed, and so sat in memory)
it might be better if you reset most of them to the default, something like this:

Processor usage
Suspend work while computer is on battery power? (matters only for portable computers) no
Suspend work while computer is in use? no
Suspend GPU work while computer is in use? Enforced by version 6.7+ no
'In use' means mouse/keyboard activity in last 3 minutes
Suspend work if no mouse/keyboard activity in last (Needed to enter low-power mode on some computers) 0 minutes
Suspend work if CPU usage is above 0 means no restriction Enforced by version 6.10.30+ 0%
Do work only between the hours of (no restriction if equal) 0.00 and 0.00
Leave tasks in memory while suspended? (suspended tasks will consume swap space if 'yes') yes
Switch between tasks every (recommended: 60 minutes) 60 minutes
On multiprocessors, use at most processors 4
On multiprocessors, use at most Enforced by version 6.1+ 100 % of the processors
Use at most (Can be used to reduce CPU heat) 100 percent of CPU time
Disk and memory usage
Use at most 1 Gbytes
Leave at least (Values smaller than 0.001 are ignored) 0.001 Gbytes free
Use at most 50 % of total disk space
Tasks checkpoint to disk at most every 60 seconds
Use at most 75 % of page file (swap space)
Use at most 50 % of memory when computer is in use
Use at most 90 % of memory when computer is not in use
Network usage
Computer is connected to the Internet about every (Leave blank or 0 if always connected. BOINC will try to maintain at least this much work.) 0 days
Maintain enough work for an additional 1 days
Confirm before connecting to Internet? (matters only if you have a modem, ISDN or VPN connection) no
Disconnect when done? (matters only if you have a modem, ISDN or VPN connection) no
Maximum download rate: Leave Blank Kbytes/sec
Maximum upload rate: Leave Blank Kbytes/sec
Use network only between the hours of (no restriction if equal) 0.00 and 0.00
Skip image file verification? Check this ONLY if your Internet provider modifies image files (UMTS does this, for example). Skipping verification reduces the security of BOINC. no
