16/02/2010 14:38:56 SETI@home Scheduler request failed: Couldn't connect to server

I'm getting this all day today. Is it me or are the project servers down? http://setiathome.berkeley.edu/sah_status.html doesn't list anything special though.

It's been occurring since yesterday. I think it was a comment in the Technical News by someone that there is a general internet SNAFU by Level3 in that area.

I have detached and reattached the project, and when that didn't work, I reset it. That didn't work either. Is this still part of the current ongoing problem other people are having, or is this just on my end?

Thank you :)

Well, the servers are back up but little traffic showing yet so it looks like the pre-existing problem with getting through to Berkeley may still be there...

Almost certainly not at your end though.

Welcome to the project!!
You seem to have joined just in time to weather the most recent server storm.
Please don't let this put you off...hang in there, it'll get fixed soon enough.

Great avatar, BTW.

Any idea when this will be back up and running? I still can't connect. Nothing wrong on my end. But am wondering if I should just uninstall this. :(

It may in fact be up and running fine, just under too much load.

.... but this is what happens when "volunteer computing" is done on a budget. BOINC doesn't care, and while the project wants the work you've done, they don't have the money necessary to always handle every request on the first try.

BOINC will keep the work you've completed, keep working on new stuff until the queue runs dry, and upload when it can.

Those of us who have been here for a while have seen this happen many times, and it pretty much always works out fine. As unplanned outages go, this one has been quite short.

I don't see a problem that BOINC won't handle on its' own, given time.

It's a tiny bit like a roller coaster. You can hang on tight and enjoy the ride, or you can say "I'm never going on one of those again!" and uninstall.

It is up and running...
It's just that the extended downtime this week has left many thousands of computers trying to report work already done and get new work to do.
And the servers are not able to fill all the requests at once. It may take another day or so to start to level out again.

So please don't give up on the project just yet....your computer will keep trying at regular intervals until it is able to do what it needs to.

Hang in there.

It sounds like while some people here can connect ok, others can't. Will having it in my taskbar, eventually get it to run? Just by leaving it there? Or do I need to close it out and manually restart it every now and again?

Thanks
Tas

Just let it run....it will keep trying and will eventually connect.
I don't think anybody is connecting OK right now. It's just the luck of the draw if your computer tries to connect at the very moment the server has a split second of bandwidth to spare.

Still luv the avatar...is that your kitty perchance?

The picture actually fits a 22.5" monitor. I scaled it down to fit as an avatar. I did have one of this breed. Genesis. I miss her dearly. She passed away from a rattlesnake bite to the top of her head. What made it all the worse, is I didn't know it. My family and I were on a week-long vacation when that happened. She hung on in agony for 5 days till I returned. Then she died in my arms.

So sorry to hear that.....

At least she was able to hold on until the one she loved returned. I am sure her love for you had something to do with that. Once she was back in your arms she could let go and be released from her suffering.

My GF and I lost a dear one to cancer at a rather young age not too long ago. We both still miss him too.

You are new to the project, but I am known as the kittyman. For my sometimes overbearing love of all things kitty. I am right now nursing my eldest for hyperactive thyroid problems...she nearly died a few weeks ago.

But this is number crunching. If you wish to know more, see my 'kitty miracle' thread in the Cafe.

Nice to have you on the project, my friend.

Regards,
Mark

We never forget the ones we've lost.

Chantal was beautiful. Seal Point Siamese, small, slender, graceful and very smart.

I waited almost six months before I got another cat. Molly is Seal Point (and beautiful) -- otherwise the opposite of Chantal.

She'll be twelve in April.

If you installed it to run "as a service" then BOINC itself will run without even showing in the task bar -- you only open the BOINC Manager if you want to see what it is doing.

If you installed it as an application, it may stop when you close the manager. I'm not 100% sure because I always choose "as a service."

I'll never forget the first kitty I ever lost......Tigger.
Passed at 5-1/2 years of age to CRF..(chronic renal failure, genetic kidney failure).
I kept her going for 9 months after her diagnosis by giving her IV fluid injections into her back every day to keep her hydrated. She finally had a stroke and passed peacefully.
I swore I would never get another kitty in the weeks after her parting.

But then the gurl that gave me the original pair called and said the same mama kitty was about to have a new litter.....and I could have some if I wanted.

Well.....one of the litter of 3, all gurls, was another orange tabby cat just like Tigger. And I didn't have the heart to split them up, so I took all 3.
Tigger II, Bandit, and Purrball. All became Squirrel's best friends very quickly.
And that's the rest of the story.
Squirrel is now 15yo, and you can read about her recent troubles in my thread in the Cafe.

If not installed "as a service" then you get the option when you close the manager (a tick box) to "Close running services". Most of the time I leave this unticked and allow Boinc to run without Boinc Manager (running GPU under Vista so the preferred option of "as a service" is no good to me).

Thank you all for your replies and your stories about your pets too. It's always hard when that time comes, since most people who have pets don't think of them as pets but like family. I went ahead and uninstalled / reinstalled the app and will just keep it active in my taskbar, and hopefully it will connect. But I need to go. It's 2:30am here, and the words on the screen no longer make any sense :) LOL
