I also get work done that seem to be impossible to upload.

In fact 5 job are still in the transfer section with "project backoff:01:34:..." status for now.

It seem that way since last night...

Is there anything we should do?

head to the Numbers crunching forum and look for the "Panic Mode on the Servers"

this is a fairly light hearted thread but people usually post there first when things arent working right

"Questions and answers" is okay, but perhaps "Web site" not so ;-)

There's nothing that can be done from here. There are plenty of threads on this forum (and others) about this topic, especially in Panic Mode On (28) Server problems, as skildude already pointed out.

just remember that we are just volunteers. Any answer we give is peer reviewed by all in the forums. It may take time for us to reply because we work and have other things going on throughout our day. I hope you understand that I wasn't trying to ignore you. I have a paying job that can keep me occupied for hours before I can get back to a thread

With regards to the errors contained in it - I've just managed to FINALLY upload 6 tasks, only taken three days - and now I have no tasks - all I get it error "unable to connect to server".
I can ping the server - all my other network connections are fine. I've performed the accepted MS standard procedure - rebooted the Pc, the modem, the router - still no response.
Wot gives?

Well, shoot. Right at the end of the work day yesterday the air conditioning unit failed. What's worse is that the cause is still a complete mystery. When the campus A/C techs came up in the early evening they just pressed the reset button and it came back to life.

But that was after a panicked fury of shutting down every server possible to save their lives. Eric was the first on the scene and smelled burned plastic, heard broken fans, and quickly started unplugging everything he could. I came up later after the A/C was on to get the web servers going again (so people could at least see we were still alive).

This morning rolled up our sleeves and surveyed the damage, which actually wasn't too bad. We definitely lost one UPS, and possibly a power supply in one of our file servers (though it seems okay for now). Eric's hydrogen survey server seemed to take the brunt of the damage, and he was ready to reinstall the OS on what disks remained visible to the system, when suddenly after the nth reboot all drives were visible again and all data was still intact. Well, that was a pleasant surprise.

Still, there was a bit of RAID and database recovery on various servers, which is why the project largely remained offline until the end of the day today. This is still going on, so we probably won't be fully back to normal until tomorrow morning at the earliest.

- Matt

That's Berkeley's tomorrow morning, not any of ours.
