BOINC will accept all features it's told about by the operating system.

Look for a line like
24/01/2010 16:28:01||Processor features: fpu tsc sse sse2 mmx
in the Messages tab after a restart.

However, it's the responsibility of the project application to determine the features (only a few do) - or yours, if you install the respective 3rd-party applications.

Gruß,
Gundolf

I suggest looking up the motherboard online and seeing if the manufacturer has made a bios update. Most AMD motherboard makers have updates so that users can install newer CPU's without having to buy a newer Mobo.many am2+ mobos can handle the AM3 CPUs and if I'm not mistaken AM2 updated MONO bios will allow AM2+ CPU's

Thanks, i have BIOS update for MB, but right now i dont have flash card to do it (in fact, i think it don't need, as we say "dont fix whats didnt broke"). Anyway at spring i will change my comp to a newer one. I restarted BOIC and it found all features, according to message list. Thanks for tip!

most motherboards come with with or have a utility that can be used from the desktop to update the BIOS rebooting to a floppy is a thing of the past. You still get to worry about an abrupt power outage killing the update but running a desktop utility is easier for most users

While I normally agree (being an IT Admin and all) that one should never update unless you're affected by an issue - in this case I'd say you're affected by an issue!

The reason why motherboard manufacturers release BIOS updates supporting newer processors is so that processor's abilities are fully utilized. If the BIOS does not know what processor is plugged in, it might not enable all the features, thus crippling your ability to take full advantage of your hardware, not to mention your monetary investment in said hardware.

I actually had this issue with an Asus M2NBP-VM CSM and an AMD Athlon 64 X2 6400+ processor. The motherboard originally had an AMD Athlon 64 X2 5600+ plugged in, but I upgraded to the 6400+ and the BIOS could not recognized the processor correctly. My performance suffered slightly because of some features not being made available to the OS. After I updated the BIOS, new BIOS options were enabled for that processor, and the proper ID was relayed back to the OS so that it could be identified correctly, and all of it's features were available (thus increasing my performance as much as 10%).

In short, you may want to consider doing the upgrade sooner rather than later.

You don't need 'flash card' to update the BIOS -

If you see the word 'flash' in the BIOS description as in 'flash BIOS'
it is because the BIOS itself is in 'flash' memory (EEPROM) chip located on the motherboard.

On the other hand it is advisable for you to have UPS as if the electricity stops (or computer hangs)
during the BIOS update ('BIOS flash') (1-2 minutes) your motherboard will be 'dead'.

Thanks guys, i found flash card and updated BIOS
In fact i have Gigabyte GA-M55PLUS-S3G motherboard, looks like it only avaliable to update from flash card, CD or floppy
I didn't noticed any changes in perfomance, but now it will be easier to sell my old computer because of proper proc indicating.

New one, i think, will be core i7. AMD procs is not a competitor to Intel now :-(

Can you satisfy my curiosity of how (step-by-step) the BIOS update from flash card is done?

Why the file can't be on hard disk and be used e.g. after safe mode reboot?

Yes. Very simple. Here is quotation from official Gigabyte site:
What is Q-Flashâ„¢
<blah-blah-blah>
Caution
Before using Q-Flash utility, go to GIGABYTE website to download the latest compressed BIOS update file that matches your motherboard model. Extract the file and save the new BIOS file to your floppy disk, USB flash drive, or hard drive. And be noted that the USB flash drive or hard drive must use FAT32/16/12 file system.

I don't use this obsolete file system at my HD's. All of them is NTFS
The second way is to use Windows utility. But...you know, this thing is safer not to do under Windows control, especcially with so much junk programs as my comp has.

Yes, that is right, but the point is that i don't pay, my boss will pay for home computer. He didn't describe exactly what configuration he was talking about by words "home computer". We all do mistakes.
