Hi,
I am trying to set up my laptop to use optimized CPU applications and use at the same time standard cuda application. The reason for this is that the laptop's gpu does not have a fan of it's own and is running too hot with optimized cupa application.

When using only Lunatics optimized CPU applications the GPU temps get around 75 degrees celsius. With optimized GPU application the temps get around 87 degrees. I am now using the GPU application for Einstein which does not use much of the GPU and the GPU temp is then about 81 degrees.

So I was wondering if using only the standard SETI cuda application I could keep the temp down and still use the GPU. So I'd like to know where to find the standard gpu applications and if someone had a ready formulated section for the app_info.xml using that application. I deleted from my current app_info the section for gpu to not use the optimized application.

I don't think the GPU temp will be any lower with standard SETI cuda application.

If you want to get it & try it:

1) Report the completed work (in Projects tab: select/highlight SETI@home and press the Update button)

2) Reset the Project - this will delete the app_info.xml and optimized applications and all remaining WUs; It will download the standard apps for CPU & GPU

3) After your GPU starts the first "standard" WU:
- check the GPU temp
- now you have the standard SETI cuda application - copy the files (.exe & .dll) to another folder for later use

When you later install again Lunatics' Unified Installer:

1) Report the completed work
2) exit BOINC
3) - just select to not use CUDA (so you don't have to manually edit the app_info.xml)
- or (if you plan to use standard SETI cuda application) select to use CUDA
and then edit the app_info.xml to change (everywhere) the name of the opt CUDA .exe to the standard app name and copy back the standard CUDA application files.

That's what I'll do, but first I will drain the cache (1+1 days) by setting NNT and let it finish all WU's. Maybe the temps would stay down if I could somehow get hold on the older cuda 2.2 version of the science application (6.08?).

Did you already check out Fred's TThrottle program? See Automatic Temperature regulation at the BOINC dev boards.

As far as I know, it allows separate throttling of GPU and CPU, depending on temperature.

Lunatics' Unified Installer v0.2 installs CUDA 2.2 .DLLs
For CUDA 2.3 .DLLs - you have to copy them manually (Stop BOINC/SETI first)

Harri Liljeroos, you can't compare the Einstein and SETI@home CUDA application.
Different projects have different CUDA apps and use the GPU different for calculation - because of this you see different GPU temps.
I read that MilkyWay have also less GPU temps than SETI@home.

If you have no app_info.xml in your project folder, BOINC will DL the new orig._MB_6.09_CUDA23_app (incl. CUDA_V2.3)*.

The pure GPU calculation time would be the same like with the opt._MB_6.08_CUDA_app (incl. CUDA_V2.3).
AFAIK, only the CUDA WU preparation time on the CPU is with opt._CUDA_app ~ 50 % faster.
Additional, if you have the VLARkill mod installed (with Lunatics Installer), it will delete < 0.12x AR WUs, which would make you whole system sluggish.

I would guess you wouldn't see a GPU temp difference between original and opt. MB CUDA app.

If you used the Lunatics Installer you have now CUDA_V2.2 installed.
For ~ 30 % speed up you should install CUDA_V2.3 .
But I would guess the GPU temp will increase little bit because of this.

For to reduce the CPU/GPU temps I would buy a laptop cooler.
Something what you do under the laptop with fans for to cool the bottom of the laptop.

[EDIT: * If you have nVIDIA_driver_190.38+ installed.
If you have < .._190.38 you get the orig._MB_6.08_CUDA_app (incl. CUDA_V2.2).]

Thank you for your reply Sutaru,
I solved the issue by downloading the Lunatics Unified Installer 0.2 and took the Cuda 2.3 dll's from Einstein. The temperature is now controlled by the TThrottle and I set the max GPU temp to 81°C. For Einstein the throttling is activating only sometimes but for Seti it is almost constantly active and the application is throttled to 25...35 % to keep the temperature at 81. This of course slows down the calculation. I am wondering if it would make any difference if I'd use the 2.2 dll's. Probably there would be less throttling but calculation would take the same amount of time.

It is difficult to compare how the computer is now doing as there aren't many this kind of GPU's around (CPU T9500, GPU Quadro FX 3600M: peak GFLOPS 160)

I don't have a cooler for the laptop, but it is raised about 1 cm above the desk to let the air flow freely.
