Hallo,
I have 2 Computers 1 with Nvidia and 1 with ATI GPU.
Nvidia use GPU ATI not.

Can I use ATI-GPU for SETI?

There is no stock application for the ATI yet. There is a hybrid application, which uses part GPU and part CPU being tested on Astropulse tasks, but since these latter are far and few between, it may not be worth it to change your machine to go do all of those.

I find this bloody annoying as well. I have some monster ATi cards sitting here twiddling their thumbs, I WANT to set my GPUs to handle most the work to power through the tasks. Both sides need to work on this properly. Us ATi guys have been sitting patiently for 1-2yrs for the ability to turn our GPUs into serious crunchers. GET YOUR ACT TOGETHER PPLS! If needed, all ATi guys should hassle the hell out of AMD/ATi about seti GPU crunching compatibility.

You might get your wish pretty soon. Some third-party programmers have been helping write and test a hybrid application for SETI@Home AstroPulse type workunits that will utilize both the CPU and GPU together for processing. Hopefully it won't be longer than a couple months, but it could be sooner!

in the mean time you can always pop over to MIlkyway or Collatz and knock out some big numbers there. The newer ATI cards really rock on both collatz and MW. My ATI 4770 was getting about 55k credits a day on Collatz and 80k/day on MW.

I also want the ati GPUs to be crunching SETI. My Radeon HD5770 is very hungry for some work units. I hope they have the necessary software ready soon.

Just a reminder that other than the ati/CPU hybrid app there isn't any word of a standard Multibeam app ready or in the works for the ATI cards.

the CUDA app was created by the folks at Nvidia, not Seti. If ATI would bring their guys around to creating an app it would be great. Hopefully eventually we'll get something for ATI.

Why don't you postulate this to guys from ati. This is the third time when I'm going to buy GPU and I must choose nVidia only because of SETI. I wanted to buy ATi 5750 with dx11, but SETI is much important for me. I think many people think like me. It would be a commercial success for Ati if they made app for SETI.
Regards. Sorry for my English.

ATi has been approached by SETI to help write an application. ATi donated an ATi Radeon HD 4xxx series card and the programming SDK, leaving the four SETI Admins to figure out a whole new programming language and develop and application. The short answer is that the Admins simply do not have the time to learn a whole new programming language will trying to keep the project running. nVidia actually wrote the CUDA application for SETI, which is why SETI has an nVdia app and not an ATi app.

SETI is important to me too, but I prefer ATi over nVidia, so I buy ATi exclusively. It's up to you what hardware you buy, but I would never buy hardware just for SETI@Home.

Crunch3r has done such a bangup job at Collatz's app. wonder what it would take to get him to take a look at the ati seti combo

Actually it is Gipsel/Cluster Physik who does all the ATI work for Collatz and Milkyway.

Hi, I wanted to test a ATI HD5770, this is a single precision card,
Collatz C. works with large-integers, so they should work fine.

I was truely amazed, was such a card could compute.
In less then 2 month's(1.5), 3 Million points (Cobblestones).

Hi, but there's a lot of difference, between the science app's from SETI and Collatz C.
SETI, uses much(all) Floating Point's (FFT), while Collatz C. works with large integers, which fit into video-memory, so little bus-traffic and high-speed computation, by the GPU (core's).

I got to 5 million on Collatz in about 2 months using my 4770. thats ATI's low end double precision card.
I moved up to a 5850 after about 2 weeks of MW and collected 800k on it. Now I run about 160k a day on MW

Wow, it really sounds like they made Credits meaningless.

The same WU's running on a cpu can take 7-8 hours. its just ATI cards are running so fast now. My 5850 can complete a task in about 105 seconds. They've also made incremental improvements to the App so it is working very fast compared to the earlier versions. I think a lot of us here had the same reaction to the CUDA app. As if the CUDA would put an end to CPU crunching. Not so. As we found out there are limits to the CUDA app. thus the need for us CPU crunchers

That's not what I'm talking about.

I know here, with CUDA, the credits are comparable (though CUDA still claims high, but that is often offset through being paired with a CPU quorum partner).

I've heard stories of MilkyWay and Collatz offering too much credits, and the fact that you can rack up a million in a couple months seems to lend credence to the claims.

If the claims are true, then they are effectively making cross-credit comparisons meaningless.

I've been running MilkyWay on my GTX295 for a few weeks since one GPU started throwing errors on S@H. Credits per unit time are roughly 6 times higher on MW (and the fastest ATI cards can do in 90 seconds what takes my GTX295 12 minutes!). So, yes, forget cross-project comparisons or your relative position in the BoincStats hierarchy.

I have now found a way to run S@H again without producing the errors (I think) so have returned to the fold - though the GPU temps are approaching 90C again and I cleaned it out only 2 days ago :-(

Message 970537 - Posted: 14 Feb 2010, 16:54:29 UTC - in response to Message 970503.

If I were to run a MW on my cpu it would take 4 or more hours. for a credit of 213.76 this compares completely with seti where I get 50-60 credits/ hour/core. same with Collatz, averaging about 700 credits but it would take a good 12-14 hours to complete on my CPU. again about 50-60 credits/hour

the deal is that most people are just running their ATI cards on COllatz and MW and getting the massive speed benefit from it. Gipsel and others have done an excellent job in their code writing which makes the GPU about 11,000X faster than any CPU.

I assume that the seti project would see similar numbers as well.
