16985 classic work units. I remember the server problems at the end that were really frustrating me as my goal before shutdown of SETI Classic was 17000 units. It was not to be. 174504 hours of crunching on the classic.

My actual start-up date is 14 May 1999 -- from my "lost" account.

I've been around since 1999. I was at college at the time and 'borrowed' a couple of computers during I.T. lessons to run SETI@home plus my trusty AMD K6-2 at home. Now working in an office surrounded by 6 computers I have them all running SETI@home, plus a handful of computers at home.

I hope that when you have 'borrowed' those computers, you at least got permission to run SETI on them.

I have been around a while (SETI@home member since 1 Jun 1999) and it is amazing the advancements that have come about.

If you read the post that you responded to, the poster appeared to be writing about what he did in the past.

I also joined SETI by running it on work computers over 10 years ago. At least 2 other co-workers were doing the same thing first, which is how I discovered SETI@home. We were working in a 2nd level helpdesk, and had some autonomy about what we did with work PCs.

I now only run SETI on my own computers.

What I was questioning was:

Now working in an office surrounded by 6 computers I have them all running SETI@home, plus a handful of computers at home.

If they've borrowed PCs in the past, they might not see anything wrong with it now.

I started on 17 June 1999. With a 166Mhz P55C. The first few workunits took over 80 hours each...ugh. Can't imagine that today..

Woke-up this AM. Yep, still here :>)

Countdown to 11 years.....

Started crunching classic on Compaq Armada Pent II 200MMX laptop w/ Win95.
IIRC, it took @ 120 or so hours per WU.

I read about the project in an article @ Pop Sci or Business Week while on a flight.
Thought it was really cool opportunity since I was already familiar w/ Seti project, Arecibo etc.

I'll hit the 10 year mark this summer.

Started running Seti on my workstation at the electronic parts store I worked at......with my boss's full permission. Don't recall where I read the article back then that piqued my interest.

A few months later I built my first home computer from scratch with the help of a good geeky type buddy for advice. Intel 233mmx with what little OCing you could do at that time.

I always chuckle at that idiom, as if the events prior to "the rest is history" isn't history also. ;)

... perhaps the expression should say "and the rest is historical in it's grandure and significance and that it is widely known by all." :-)

It simply means that the bit of history being referred to is from the storied point onward.

Oh, I know what it means, it's just curious how the etymology came to be to arrive at that ironical phrase :)

Hi there,

I joined on May 20, 1999 and crunched 3,596 classic workunits before switching to BOINC. It's been fun feeling like I'm helping out with something. I hope we find a signal someday, though.
