Message 37189 - Posted: 16 Oct 2004, 14:43:36 UTC

I had 2 wu in my work tab, one was 100% done. I cilcked update on the project tab, and my 100% workunit disapeared from the work tab. I quickly clicked the transfer tab, and nothing was being transfered. I clicked on the messages tab, and there was nothing about a recent transfer mentioned. This has happened on two of my computers, and i want to know if this is normal, and if it is, is it going to the server?

But did it get sent to the server or not?

Yes (probably).

Check your message tab and you should see that the upload occurred before you did the 'update'. Of course, if you've restarted BOINC since the upload, the message log is gone.

If you install BOINCView, it has a tab of Completed work units you can review whenever you want.

I just checked my messages...No uploads to the server are mentioned... But the results have given me credit for a wu sent to the server today.. I'm just not sure if its the same workunit. (because i have 2 computers running boinc and niether one has recorded an transfer to the server) it probably is. I just wish that boinc would record everything in a log or something. oh well...

Boinc does record everything in a log, thats what you see in messages. Just that it starts a new file every time its started.

Current messages are in file stdout.txt. Messages from the previous run are in stdout.old. Anything older is gone. Both files are in the boinc directory. If you've only restarted boinc once, the upload messages should be in the stdout.old file, use notepad to read it.

Thx, I now see that the file was uploaded to the server yesterday, but my work tab did not update it so it appeared to still be there this morning. When I clicked update today, it updated the work tab and cleared the already uploaded workunit.

Just one thing I dont get: Even though it was uploaded yesterday, the results on my account info says it was received today. Does anyone know how that works?

Yes your results do not get sent to the server until you connect to it.I think when a wu is 100% complete it gets uploaded but it goes to a que and waits until you connect to the seti server until it gets sents.I think.

Mixxter, I'm sure someone will correct me if I'm wrong, but the process works in two steps. To expand on what Rachel just said:

1) When your machine completes a Workunit the results are returned immediately to Berkeley. At that point your Work tab shows 100% progress and the status says "Ready to Report". But this result is just sitting in a queue at Berkeley. Your BOINC client needs to Contact them and "Report" the result for the credit process to begin and before it will appear in your Results View.

2) The next time your BOINC Core Client contacts them, (which could be when it is ready to request more work or if you do it manually by r-clicking the project name on the Projects tab and select "Update") then the client "Reports" all of those work units completed. At that time they disappear from your work tab and may seem to "get lost". This is also the time that the credit process begins for that WU and you'll see it as completed on their web site.

Hope that helps!

Two things happen to a WU when it completes - first the results data gets uploaded, and later the CPU time gets reported. The last column in the work tab says whate state its in. The "reporting" part doesn't happen until BOINC contacts the server again, which can take some time.

Times you see are UTC. Times in your log are local to your system.
