I have donated once, more than a year ago, and will probably do so again. But I must say a superficially personal letter puts me off, however worthy the cause is. Partly beacause of that my donation will not be immediately forthcoming...

Aurora Borealis wrote I note that I have received a second email from seti requesting a donation, six days after the previous one, both sent to the same email address. This time most of it was worded differently, and this supposedly came form a different person. "Dear SETI@home volunteer: I'm David P. Anderson, Director of SETI@home. As an active SETI@home volunteer ... " UNFORTUNATELY he perpetuates the same mistake I complained about last week, again incorrectly saying that my donation would be tax deductible. I guess that means that David Anderson doesn't read this board, and no informed him of the mistake in the email that was sent out under Dan Werthimer's name last week. Martin. ____________

I guess that means that David Anderson doesn't read this board, and no informed him of the mistake in the email that was sent out under Dan Werthimer's name last week. So I guess this means that busy people with real jobs don't read the forums. Just joking (sort of). ____________

I am sure you are joking, as Matt has said that he reads the replies to his posts, and has passed on the comments. (grin). see the newer thread here. http://setiathome.berkeley.edu/forum_thread.php?id=58131 Martin. ____________

However I was actually a little offended by the (presumably unthinking ?) assumption in the email that everyone who donates computer time and or money is a resident/taxpayer of the USA. Idea: Person-outside-USA sends/gives monetary gift to USA-taxpaying-SETI-supporter. USA-taxpaying-SETI-supporter then sends tax deductible donation to SETI of the same amount ... ...PLUS tax donation benefit (37% or whatever). Person-outside-USA full donation gets to SETI USA-taxpaying-SETI-supporter gets no monetary benefit. SETI gets more money than original direct donation. ____________ SETI@home since 1999 "Set it, and Forget it!"

Partly beacause (sic) of that my donation will not be immediately forthcoming... Not to worry, suf - I just made another small donation on your behalf to the SETI@home project, the first time I've donated twice in one year.

However I was actually a little offended by the (presumably unthinking ?) assumption in the email that everyone who donates computer time and or money is a resident/taxpayer of the USA. Unfortunately the tax consequences for the US reciepient are not neutral in many cases. The US recipient may end up paying more taxes because of the money passing through his hands. ____________ BOINC WIKI
