Hey there, I'm a little bit confused by this. I've just restarted with the SETI@Home project, and have just uploaded my first set of results. I know there have been recent issues with some BOINC services, but I'm unsure if they're related. I've just uploaded my first set of WU's. All but one have come up as "error while computing" - and I can't seem to find any information on what the error actually was so obviously this doesn't give me any information as to where I am supposed to start looking. If anybody could give some assistance on what I should be looking for, that would be greatly appreciated. |

Hey there, If you look on the web at the task detail for the ones that errored out, there is near the bottom of the page the stderr output which includes information that might help (either you or us) figure it out. The most likely culprits are overheating and overclocking. BOINC WIKI |

For the two with: <message> See: Unrecoverable error for result "result" (- exit code -1073741819 (0xc0000005)) Seeing how other tasks are getting through without a problem, this may be an intermittent problem on your machine. For the one with: <message> The explanation is in the result text itself: SETI@home error -6 Bad workunit header !swi.data_type || !found || !swi.nsamples File: ../seti_header.cpp Line: 204 Perhaps something didn't get sent to your computer. When you click on the Task ID numbers, you'll get a lot more information about the task, including the info out of stderr.txt that's sent back to the server. It'll hold the error message and I am trying to get a lot of them with their explanations together in my BOINC FAQs (bookmark the page, may be of help in the future :-)). |

Thanks guys :) It gives me at least a basic idea of what's going on - if this is what the error messages are describing, it's possible that the compatibility problems I've been having between RAM and motherboard causing BSODs haven't been helping :( I'm just waiting for some more RAM to turn up - hopefully after that, no more of these messages. |

RAM problems can cause all kinds of havoc. New RAM might well fix the problem. BOINC WIKI |

Well yeah - although I'm surprised it caused tehse sorts of problems. My problem is that my board doesn't like 1066 RAM (even though it 'supports' it) causing random BSOD's, and i've given up trying to get it to work so trading it in for some 800 which I already know does work (I just don't have enough of it to be useful). I'd just kinda figured that Seti would recover - if it's the BSOD's causing it, then perhaps it's corrupting something? |

I don't think you need to buy new 800 MHz RAM - just go to BIOS and tell it to use RAM at 400 MHz (= DDR2 800) Or adjust the timings for RAM ( CAS Latency (CL) RAS To CAS Delay (tRCD) RAS Precharge (tRP) RAS Active Time (tRAS) etc. ) to bigger numbers. You can also raise the RAM voltage (if this is supported in your BIOS). (You probably know this: to go to the BIOS restart computer and at the starting (black) screen press Del or Delete or F2 or ... check the motherboard manual which key to press) (If you think the 1066 MHz RAM can't run at 800 MHz - it can even run at 40 MHz - if your car can run at 200 it can easy run at 80 :) ) . Yeah, dropping the RAM speed has been tried ... to death. It stil ldoesn't work (I have it running at 400 now). Although actual slower RAM does help, a lot - no bluescreens in over a week, opposed to multiple daily :( I'm just gonna try the 800 because I suspect that's gonna be fine, given my testing with 1gb of it - it's just 1gb ain't much nowadays ;) I'm just a bit over having arguments with it and want to go back to something that works :) |

Did you try higher RAM voltage? What type motherboard (vendor & model) is it? What type of RAM is it? Are the 3 RAM modules identical? Some motherboards work better if only 2 DIMMs are in use. I am running Seti, Einstein and Rosetta on a 64 bit Windows 7 machine. Einstein and Rosetta work fine but all I get for the Seti calculations are "error while computing". Previously under Vista my Seti calcs worked fine. |

And doing so since November, I see. Why did you wait so long to ask for help? Your error is - exit code -1073741819 (0xc0000005) See http://boincfaq.mundayweb.com/index.php?language=1&view=98 for possible causes. |

vtecman40, I see why you could be asking. You have timed out on one WU and have been running the other two for almost a month. Can you give us a bit more information on how you run your machine? Things like how much time it is on a day, Do you have it set to not do work while computer is active, things like that. Since you do have some credit (1) it must have done something but with a bit more info we might be able to get you going better. PROUD MEMBER OF Team Starfire World BOINC |
