i'm nearly completely computer illiterate. i need to ask, is my system helping if i just have the application turned on, or do i have to do something to get it to begin 'searching"?

No. Nothing else to do. Your system is attached to the Seti project and has been assigned its first WU (Work Unit). As long as Boinc is allowed to run it should take care of everything automatically. It runs the project application for the data analysis, it will upload/report result, and fetch new work as needed when the internet is available.

You have to have the computer turned on for a few hours a day, and allow BOINC to access the network occasionally to upload and download tasks. If you do not have an always on network connection, let us know and we will help with how to set up for normally disconnected.
