Message 951312 - Posted: 1 Dec 2009, 8:05:57 UTC

I have been running seti on this work windows computer for a few years now and everything has been working fine. Last week I had to install a Secure Services box which is running a firewall. Since then I have been getting the following messages

Reporting 18 completed tasks; requesting new tasks
Project communication failed: attempting access to reference site
Internet access OK - project servers may be temporarily down
Scheduler request failed: Server returned nothing (no headers, no data)

When each task completes it uploads to the server okay, and if I check my account on this web site, then check the computer tasks, it shows them as completed and vaildated.

On the BOINC manager, under the tasks tab, all the tasks are still there at 100% saying Ready To Report.

I have tried opening various TCP ports in the firewall, including 31416, 532, 1043, 3856, & 5517, but non of these have any effect.

I can't tell the firewall to accept the boinc.exe program as it doesn't have that feature. All I can do is accept or drop TCP / UDP ports.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Iain.

Message 951317 - Posted: 1 Dec 2009, 8:34:24 UTC - in response to Message 951312.

Port 31416 is only used on the local computer for parts of BOINC to communicate with each other. Ports 80 and 443 need to be opened for boinc.exe only for internet access.

When each task completes it uploads to the server okay, and if I check my account on this web site, then check the computer tasks, it shows them as completed and vaildated.

On the BOINC manager, under the tasks tab, all the tasks are still there at 100% saying Ready To Report.

Uploading & reporting are two separate things. When work is done, its result file is uploaded to the server and saved in a directory on a disk. Then BOINC has to separately report to the database that these tasks are done. Since it takes as much overhead to report one task as it takes to report 20 tasks, it's preferred to report as many tasks as possible in one go.

So are you completely sure you're looking at the correct hostID when it comes to it having uploaded & reported the tasks?

The BOINC program was installed using all the default settings and nothing has been changed, so I doubt very much if it is pointing at the wrong location. How do I check?

You have three computers listed at Computers belonging to Iain. The computer ID is also listed in the Messages tab after a restart of BOINC, in the first line containing [SETI@home].

What Ageless wanted to know is if you are sure to compare the computers with the same ID, as it is pretty improbable that tasks are listed as reported online while still in the Transfer (or Tasks) tab of BOINC manager (though not impossible).

BOINC uses pot 80 (http) and port 443 (https) outbound to the internet. It does do http_put, http_get, and http_post. If some of these are blocked, then you might see some things work and others not.

Typically a personal firewall can block outgoing from a particular executable, but a firewall appliance can not.

Message 951613 - Posted: 2 Dec 2009, 8:10:23 UTC - in response to Message 951540.

You are correct in saying that I have 3 computers running Seti. Two of them are at home and working fine. The third one (lb-55-999) is now sitting behind a hardware firewall, and it is this one that is having problems.

As it stands at the moment, Seti has 18 tasks at 100% with a status of Ready to Report. There is nothing under the Transfers tab. Yesterday when some tasks completed data was transeferred back to Seti with no problem, but the tasks stayed on the Tasks page. More data was also downloaded successfully.

On the Projects tab, the Work Done figure is stuck at the value just before the firewall was installed. On the 2 computers at home this has been updated and is significantly higher.

In the Messages tab, I still have the same 3 error messages that I first reported.

It looks as if everything is working okay, apart from the Work Done figure being updated and the tasks removed from the Tasks page. If you can see these tasks as being okay then all I really need to do is delete the entries somehow. Correct?

I don't really want to remove BOINC from the computer as it is running 24 x 7 x 365 and is doing a lot of work for you. I am more than happy to try various things to try and get this working.

Something else first, in lieu of what happened to someone else: Are you allowed to run BOINC/Seti from work?

If you do have permission from your peers, you work with, or are the main IT'er there, please give details on the actual Secure Services "box".

Yes, there is no problem with Seti running on this computer.

I am the main ITer here, but my knowledge is PC based, not networking.

The firewall is part of a BT Secure Services SNAP VPN 1202 (rack mounted.

Message 951633 - Posted: 2 Dec 2009, 11:53:03 UTC - in response to Message 951613.

...The third one (lb-55-999) is now sitting behind a hardware firewall, and it is this one that is having problems.

I assume lb-55-999 is the host name. We can't see the name on your computers page, but I think it's this one (4463831), since it hasn't contacted the project since 25 Nov 2009 16:09:24 UTC.

That computer has only 14 tasks listed, one of which has been reported on 18 Nov 2009 0:36:19 UTC. The other 13 are either uploaded but not reported or still running/ready to start. However, the last one was downloaded on 23 Nov 2009 7:21:39 UTC, so no data has been downloaded yesterday (1 Dec 2009), at least according to the status page (see link above, click on the number of tasks at the bottom of the page).

On the Projects tab, the Work Done figure is stuck at the value just before the firewall was installed. On the 2 computers at home this has been updated and is significantly higher.

That at least is consistent, since there was no server contact.

In the Messages tab, I still have the same 3 error messages that I first reported.

It looks as if everything is working okay, apart from the Work Done figure being updated and the tasks removed from the Tasks page. If you can see these tasks as being okay then all I really need to do is delete the entries somehow. Correct?

No, they are not okay. So, if you abort them, the computing time will be wasted.

As to the error messages, you could try to switch to HTTP 1.0 and see if that helps. See this entry at the BOINC FAQ Service.

Gundolf

The computer ID of the affected computer is 5056983 not the one you gave. This says that the last contact was today. There are definately 18 tasks waiting to report.

I tried the cc_config.xml file and restarted BOINC after a dnsflush, but the same error messages still come up.

It hasn't reported anything since yesterday morning.

Have you checked the manual on the Secure Server? Also on SNAP View?
You could always call their customer support to find out how to configure the firewall.

Oh wow, then you should have 632 tasks on that computer (643 - 11 reported ones). If you don't, that's a lot of "ghost" tasks.

To approach the solution of your problem, you should expand your cc_config.xml file so that it looks like

<cc_config>
  <log_flags>
    <file_xfer_debug>1</file_xfer_debug>
    <http_debug>1</http_debug>
    <http_xfer_debug>1</http_xfer_debug>
  </log_flags>
  <options>
    <http_1_0>1<http_1_0>
  </options>
</cc_config>
and post the result of one update attempt from your Messages tab.

Is it possible this appliance is a proxy in addition to being a firewall?

John, not according to http://www.clearpathnet.com/snap/specs.asp, but I may be reading that wrong. ;-)

Thank you for the link. I can't see anything about proxy either, but I am not an expert on proxies (having never had to deal with one), and may have missed something.

You said in an earlier post that this computer has 643 tasks, but all I can see under the Tasks tab are about 30.

That still looks looks like HTTP 1.1, but I'm no expert.

Could you add the line
<unparsed_xml>1</unparsed_xml>
to the <log_flags> section of your cc_config.xml file and then post the content of the file here?

You said in an earlier post that this computer has 643 tasks, but all I can see under the Tasks tab are about 30.

You can see for yourself if you look at the details of Computer 5056983. That means there are over 600 ghost tasks for that computer, i.e. tasks that where sent by the server but never reached your computer. There's nothing to worry about, they'll time out and get reissued.

Gruß,
Gundolf

Yes, that's an error in my post, sorry!

It should look like this:

03/12/2009 10:13:08 Missing end tag in cc_config.xml

That entry should read:

<options>
<http_1_0>1</http_1_0>
</options>

The "/" indicates the end tag.
