Message 949090 - Posted: 22 Nov 2009, 17:29:38 UTC

Hi. Am established SETI@home user, have switched to BOINC a few years ago, and am now trying to make BOINC sware work on my new laptop.
No work will start. Sometimes file download but I never see them reach "100%" downloaded.
For past 2 weeks no job of work has even started.
I've tried turning off norton 360 firewall (in any case BOINC is allowed with this).
I use a wireless broadband internet link ("Virgin mobile dongle).
I dont understand what problem is. Have messed around with account/computer configurations to no effect. I used to have trouble with my last pc using BOINC (never using old SETI@home sware).
Glad of good advice, so I can get back to crunching work units, like in the good old days!

Can you unhide your computers, so we can see what is going on in respect to work? For this go to Your account->Seti@Home preferences->Edit them->change "Should SETI@home show your computers on its web site?" to yes->Click Update preferences. Then it will still take about an hour for those changes to propagate as pages around here are cached.

We can't see anything private about your systems, not IP addresses, not machine names. But we can check what happens to your work.

There is also a preference in Your account->Global preferences that says "Suspend work while computer is in use?" .. if you don't mind BOINC continuing to do work while you have the computer on, set this one to No.

"Suspend work if no mouse/keyboard activity in last" is best kept at zero (or ---), it's used if you want to hibernate the system.

I think the problem lies within downloading, not running. So, could you post some (error) messages around a download attempt?

Gruß,
Gundolf

Gruß Gott, Gundolf.

It is hard to actually screenshot any error msgs (there are'nt any I dont think).

The "Status" on the "projects" tab just says "download failed"; And whilst watching relevant files download on the "transfers" tab, I see the files download, but none ever reaches 100% downloaded.

Something is stopping them complete their download.

I think its true that the problem is not with the running - the processes never get that far.

I suspect my Vista home basic sp2 operating system is behind it, but have no evidence.

AL.

You don't need a screenshot. In the Messages tab, you should find the respective messages for a download. You can copy them to the clipboard (button Copy selected messages) and paste them here.

Gundolf, there's rather a lot, I'm afraid:

That's why I wrote "Copy selected messages" and not "Copy all messages" ;-)

In your Computing preferences, there's one option, near the bottom
Skip image file verification?
Check this ONLY if your Internet provider modifies image files (UMTS does this, for example).
Skipping verification reduces the security of BOINC.
Set it to "yes" and click the Update button in the Projects tab. Then you'll have to wait for 24 hours, because your quota is too low.

Gruß,
Gundolf

What's your work request preferences on http://setiathome.berkeley.edu/prefs.php?subset=project for the following:

Use Central Processing Unit (CPU)
Use NVIDIA GPU if present
(enforced by 6.10+ clients)

Run only the selected applications
SETI@home Enhanced:
Astropulse:
Astropulse v5:
If no work for selected applications is available, accept work from other applications?
Use Graphics Processing Unit (GPU) if available
Use Central Processing Unit (CPU)

Edit: Ah, at this moment Seti has problems. A disk crashed, they're not giving out work. From the front page:

November 23, 2009
We just had a disk failure on our raw data storage device, which we're in the process of fixing, but still we'll probably run out of workunits to send out tonight.

You might want to change "If no work for selected applications ...? to YES.

Still doesnt work.

Any good suggestions welcome, or I'm going to have to give up and uninstall.

Would my IP address be relevant here? (I note the Seti@home configuration for my computer states it starts with a "10", which is for an internal ip address within a network)

What errors do you get?

"(Project has no jobs available)" is no error!

Gundolf
