It analyzes sound waves in space? I thought sound didn't work in space. |

its actually radio waves at 1400 Mhz. this is a signal length beyond our hearing. See how it works here In a rich man's house there is no place to spit but his face. Diogenes Of Sinope |

So how does the SETI program distinguish alien signals from random radio spam? I'm assuming aliens would have a completely different set of signals (if they're even radio at all.) Also are we sending out any sound waves to anyone out there? What if there's an alien planet who has a "seti" program looking for other life? Can they hear us? |

I think the 1400MHz may be related to this Here, Which is the Hydrogen line. The T1 Trust, PRR T1 Class 4-4-4-4 #5550, 1 of America's First HST's |

So how does the SETI program distinguish alien signals from random radio spam? I'm assuming aliens would have a completely different set of signals (if they're even radio at all.) The antanna sweeps the sky at the same rotation rate as the Earth. Given the beam width of the antenna, a signal would rise and fall inside a particular shaped envelops (think bell curve). SETI also looks for spikes and triplets. SETI also insists that the signal repeat from the same place in the sky on different nights. We are broadcasting radio frequency all of the time - all of the TV and Radio broadcasts ever put on the airways are still traveling through space. It is not sound waves as sound waves require a liquid, solid, or gas to travel through. Space is a vacuum and cannot transmit sound. But electromagnetic radiation (radio, tv, microwaves, infra red, visible light, ultra violet, xrays, and gamma rays) do travel quite well through a vacuum. BOINC WIKI |
