How about the people that don't do $10 donations but make bigger donations every few years. You guys are way out there. I don't have a star right now but if I go by Marks $10 year I would be wearing one for a few years to come. I find this whole thread insulting and wish it would go away as people are complaining without really having a clue. I don't understand why anyone should even begin to feel guilty or made to feel guilty over whether they have donated or not - no matter how big or small a RAC they have. Really, is not donating cpu time and paying extra electricity bills by keeping computers running 24/7 enough! How about we go back to the original DC concept of just utilising spare cpu cycles for when the computer is running and nothing more....LOL, "Save the planet", shut your computers down when they are not being used (where running BOINC is not considered using the computer).... ;P There's a lead ballon if I've ever seen one. |

That's a riot, hiamps wants to retire THIS thread, but keep the cuda startup info one going :-) So much for timely merit 'clues.' Well, folks know my opinion... it isn't that the contribution thumb screws have hidden cranks left on the loyal legion who read here. The project needs to promote itself better and significantly broaden the base of donors. The opportunity to crunch is just one tool in that arsenal. Cheers. |

How about we go back to the original DC concept of just utilising spare cpu cycles for when the computer is running and nothing more....LOL, "Save the planet", shut your computers down when they are not being used (where running BOINC is not considered using the computer).... ;P There's a lead ballon if I've ever seen one. Gosh you mean the 90+% of the computers on the project, from the 90+% of people who never post to the forums. You can see if I've got a green star or not. Let's talk about my other contributions. I'm a member of The Planetary Society. They had a fund raising drive for Seti before classic launched. I sent a check, that gave birth to the project. I'm a citizen of the USA. Some of my tax $ goes through the NSF to the project. I'm a citizen of California, some of my tax money goes to the University of California. Obviously I pay an electric bill to keep a computer crunching. Add it up and it is obviously more than the green star. Now as to the top crunch machines list. The unsaid thing is are these machines purpose built to crunch? Out of the top 100 I'm willing to bet more than one wasn't as well as more than one was. No way to tell which is which. Of the people who purpose built a crunch machine, it looks like there is a general feeling that rather than dropping every last dime into the crunch box, and electric bill you should have sent a few shekels to Seti. I can see where that comes from. I can also see that if you do end up on a top x list where you might get heckled over it. Not good form, but life happens. Now as to different color stars, every other place has the bronze plaque with those patrons, and president's circles. But if we are doing that, better get a halo out for those of us who gave to the Planetary Society over eleven years ago to start the project! As to how much crunch the project needs, it looks like right now the project is crunching faster than it is collecting new data. That may not always be the case. |

Just wanted to thank this thread for getting my wallet out and sending off a few spare dollars. It's all for a good cause. I spend more on coffee in a week than what it takes to get a green star here. Regards, |

Or, $25. As I say, previously, less than I spend on coffee (yes, you can usually find me coming off a coffee high at around 5 pm each day). Regards, |

For those who think its tough or they cant donate to Seti directly... http://www.goodsearch.com/ Select the University of California - Seti@home under charity $0.01 per search is donated directly to Seti@home. Eric was going to do an official post about this but never got around to doing it. Bob. Do you Good Search for Seti@Home? http://www.goodsearch.com/?charityid=888957 Or Good Shop? http://www.goodshop.com/?charityid=888957 |

http://www.goodsearch.com/ Funny that one. It uses Yahoo Search, but runs a Google-analytics script in the background. |

Took 2 minutes with my visa to get a green star. My only complaint is that I could not buy another colour... |

Good on you woodenboatguy and Mamluk! We need more people like this! - Luke. EDIT: I'm locking this thread and resting the topic. It's had a good run, and thank you all for participating and voicing your opinions. Also of note,I merely started this thread so the milestones thread wouldn't bear the brunt of these posts. Thanks all. - Luke. |
