Message 946505 - Posted: 11 Nov 2009, 6:55:11 UTC

Please take a couple of minutes out of your day to think about those who have traveled abroad to we can live in peace at home.
Those who left and returned. And the many who did not.
And those who are out there today, many miles from their home and the people they love.

Just a couple of minutes......it's A Pittance Of Time.

Not new, but very touching.

God bless all who have fought and are still fighting for all that they hold dear.
What meowing lurks in the hearts of man? The kittyman knows....MEOWhahahahahahha!

Have made friends here.
Most were cats.

According to the History Channel on TV, It seems that a UCB(Berkeley) Professor was involved in the Manhattan Project during WWII to build the plants to make the Atom Bombs that were used against Japan. Wow.

Any other veterans here?

Lets see, I had an Ancestor who was a Major General in the Grand Army of the Republic(GAR) in the US Civil War(I even have a B&W photo of Him from back then wearing His uniform and His Stetson Hat had an Ostrich feather in It, He also was wearing a sword too, It was a Union uniform or Dark Blue as It looks black in the photo), My Dad & Uncle both served in the US Army during WWII, My brother was in the US Navy for just over 20 years and I was in the US Army for a brief period of time(all served honorably of course), So Yeah, Lots.

No banana, SJ.

How many of you are veterans? How many of you have put your *$$ on the line to serve your country?

Back when, German women were not allowed in the Military. My Grandfather served in World War One and Two. He survived, but some of my relatives were lost on the Russian Front.

Sorry but If one has served in the US Military Honorably, then one is a veteran, As that is what the VA says. My brother and I never fired a shot in anger and I doubt Dad or My Uncle did either, As to the Major General, No idea, One doesn't have to put ones ass on the line to serve, If You think that, then You are wrong. Dad was in the European Theater in WWII and My Uncle was in the Pacific, One was a corporal(flew a stick and a typewriter) and the other(Uncle) a warrant officer as He could fly a plane. Please Don't Dis Me or My relatives.

Sorry SJ, no insult intended. You served, you took the risk, you were willing to take the chance. You need not have seen combat, you were willing.

One has difficulty understanding just what it means to put yourself in harms way for whatever reason. Veterans have done that. Not all have seen combat. But they were prepared. That's what it takes. If you served, you are as much a veteran as any who died. You and I are just a bit luckier, thank God.

Ok, Apology accepted(If that is what that is, If not, I still accept It or none taken). No one died in My family in their service and all willingly volunteered, Jim would have been drafted and wanted to serve in the Air Force(bad idea and a lot of people were on a waiting list for there), So Jim enlisted in the Navy as He really didn't want to go to Vietnam(He had a head injury(bruised brain from a car rollover accident, the roof collapsed and He wasn't belted in, nor ejected from the car, Today It might be different, But back then If You were disabled in any way the Navy said Medical Discharge, No exceptions He said) that would have made Him 4F, As He said He hid It in the Navy by taking notes, As He had short term memory problems, He even earned the right to wear the Gold Stripes/Hash Marks and was an E9 rank at retirement(He was a diesel engineman and the Navy was phasing that specialty out, He barely made It to 20 years), But never did as He didn't want to stand out He said), My Dad was shelled by the Hermann Goring Division of the SS @ Anzio, My Uncle supposedly flew a P39 in the Pacific, But I find that a bit hard to swallow as I think all or most P39 aircraft went to Russia as Tank Busters(So I have no idea what My Uncle did and I can't ask Him as He passed away around 1990 and no one else really knows anymore than I do either), As the USAAF was not too impressed with the mid engine design(WWI thinking still possibly), But the Russians were and the Russians were thankful to get them too).

To all veterans, no matter what your country, no matter what the war, you are all heroes. I sat in gasthauses in Germany listening to "war stories" from the "other side," They are our stories, your stories, stories of families and children and horrors of war. The common thread; we fought for our countries. I have found "heroes" all over the world.

Enough ... war is hell.

In a wheelchair-I don't qualify for the military or I would've served.

My father and his elders served as did my next to oldest brother. My father's brother died in Korea.

Respect and honor for those who served and still do serve.
