From my search of the forums I see there is no auto-update. Is there a central source of info to indicate what the current version is? Is it generally recommended to stay as up to date as possible?

Thank you in advance.

This link will always show the currently recommended version for your platform.

That depends. If you want to use all the (new) features of your computer, like GPUs, then yes. Otherwise, you can very well use older versions of BOINC. I don't have such a device and am happily running 5.10.45.
