I recently did a clean upgrade from Vista Business (32-bit) to Windows 7 (64-bit) after reformatting the system drive. After installing the current BOINC software (6.10.17), I noticed that the BOINC directory in ALL PROGRAMS is empty, and it was not installed as a service. If for some reason that I have to terminate BOINC, the only way to restart it is to recycle the machine. Any help will be greatly appreciated.

So you reformatted the drive - which deletes everything on that drive - and then installed another OS on it, then BOINC and how do you expect anything to have survived that format? That's why you back-up things and put them back later.

Installing BOINC as a service is something you have to do yourself, 3rd screen in the installer click Advanced, next screen check the "Protected application execution" option. See How to install BOINC as a service (BOINC 6 series) on Windows?

If for some reason that I have to terminate BOINC, the only way to restart it is to recycle the machine. Any help will be greatly appreciated.

Ow, come on. Never tried BOINC Manager->Advanced view->File->Exit? You then get an exit dialog at which you can check "Stop running science applications when exiting the Manager" and a "Remember this in the future" option.

Then when you want to restart BOINC, all you do is Windows Start button->Programs->BOINC->BOINC Manager. Yes, weirdly enough, it's that easy.

1) By reformating my system drive, I had in effect created a full OS installation as opposed to just an upgrade, which would just have laid one OS over another.

2) All of the data files for BOINC are on a separate physical drive and were successfully attached during installation via the Advanced panel (3rd screen).

3) The application was not installed as a service intentionally, so that I can used the screen saver, which work quite well.

4)The exit dialog was setup as you suggested. I always exit BOINC immediately after it first launches just to complete that dialog.

5)The only problem that I have is that the program entry in Windows Start button->Programs->BOINC->BOINC Manager is EMPTY.

Ah, I can finally post my answer. Knocks on wood the database doesn't go down again when I hit Post Reply. ;-)

Do you run BOINC under another account than the one you installed it with? If you do, you will have to check the option "Allow all users on this computer to control BOINC" in the installer.

And else do a repair installation of BOINC (through Add/Remove Programs or by starting the same installer once more). Or place a short-cut to BOINC Manager in your %systemdrive%:\Documents and Settings\Your.Account\Menu Start\Programs\BOINC\ directory.
