I have been having the same issue for several weeks with SETI. I asked the same question on another board (here) and they shuffled me off to some obscure board. Then all of a sudden a steady flow until yesterday. At least BOINC seems to say that the servers are down. I read the Rosetta board(s) and they seem to indicate that Rosseta was stopping the creation of Macintosh data. I am beginning to think that SETII is doing the same. I went for say 5 years with zero issues and now this "No work available for platform". Fine, if they are going to drop Macintosh great just tell us and we will find some other worthwhile projects to support. I just find the cut off of data to the Macintosh group just plain bad form without a clear statement from the site. |

I just find the cut off of data to the Macintosh group just plain bad form without a clear statement from the site. Probably because it's all in your head. :-) Seti had a campus wide 24 hour scheduled power outage yesterday, prior to that time they were powering down all servers. Now we're recovering from all that, although some may be kept off line till later today when it's Tuesday maintenance. No conspiracy theories. The next scheduled 24 hour+ power outage will be January 3rd-January 4th. So you can write that down in your calendar. |

Hello, I've seen that message off and on for years & I run SETI on all three major platforms, never thought of the possibility that there could be a data format created for each type of OS. I just took it for granted that a data unit was a standard that any client could process, like RTF, or Gedcom in genealogy. So thats the way it is right? |

Hello, All workunits are the same regardless of OS. It's like a PDF file; the files can be opened by any computer so long as it has the right application installed (Acrobat for Windows, Acrobat for Mac, Acrobat for Linux). Simply attaching to a project will cause BOINC to download the appropriate application for your OS as long as it is supported by the project's developers. |

If you set your account to keep a day or twos worth of work on hand, you may still get the message but you will be able to ride over most outages without running out of work. A while ago we had an outage that lasted about two weeks caused by hardware failure. To ride over this type of outage, you would have to crunch on a second project. |

Thanks for verifying my belief, because I realized that is what it was because I'd never checked, you just sometimes expect things to be done the right way without checking. Dangerous oversight in the IT biz :) I expected the creators of the whole BOINC & Seti@Home idea to do things the "right way" :) I think the original Macintosh user that felt like the platform was being "what is the word.. "Marginalized" must have been getting flak from surrounding people to go off like that. I've been there done that and finally realized that it doesn't matter as long as your happy with what ever it is you have. I'm defiantly a Mac person myself, but being in the biz for 20+ years working with all types gives you a different perspective and I wholly recommend to anyone with just one computer or OS to branch out and explore. You can probably get a Linux box up and running crunching units for free & learn a lot in the process too! I'm on a bring up what ever I can find to run Seti unit's again binge. I wanted to experiment with a small cluster of 4 old PIII, tied to a eSeries Rack server just for the knowledge gained, but see I need to do lots more reading so I'm just installing Xubuntu on them which actually has BOINC as a Add in program in the repository. What bothered me when I went to set it up was that SetI was not in the list to select. That needs to be fixed! Anyone that can point me at a easy way to cluster old computers, jump right in or direct me to the right place. A forum for that would be interesting. Once again Thanks! |

One thing you need to be aware of is that BOINC does not support clusters. It treats each computer in the cluster as an individual machine; they are not seen as one computer. |

Hey there. I'm relatively new to the BOINC scene and would like to contribute (and have done some work). I am pleased to be using this computer for seti@home . I am running a dual core macintosh with about 80 GB of free space and the program will not recognize; a) that there is free space available b) there is no scheduled activity, so work can be downloaded. I tried unsuccessfully to tie into other projects. It repeatedly tells me that there is no space available on the hard drive. I freed up some space and made sure that there are no other applications running. I have uninstalled and rebooted new BOINC managers. The same problems occur. I have checked numerous pages to find a solution and I am stumped. I also have not been able to located where, exactly BOINC stores data on my hard drive. In accordance to what seems to be the regular query/routine, I will list the message particulars. I imagine this isn't news to anyone...... used by BOINC 14.26MB free 85.40 GB Used B.O.P. 147.15 GB SETI@Home usage - 113.76 KB General prefs: from Seti@home (last modified 09-Apr-2010 22:59 Computer Location : Home General prefs: no separate prefs for home; using your defaults readinf preferences overide file Prefrerences: Max memory usage when active: 1638.40MB Max memory usage when Idle: 1638.40MB max disk usage 0.00GB max download rate 20480 bytes/sec max upload rate 5120 bytes/sec to change visit the web site of an attached project, or click on preferences) update requested by user sending scheduler request: Requested by user Requesting new tasks Scheduler request completed: got 0 new tasks Message from server: No work sent Message from server: Seti@home Enhanced needs 32.00MB more disk space. Thanks for the help Ozzfan I figured that it was some sort of setting problem. I don't know why I didn't see that option earlier. That was pretty easy. Everything is up and running. -David. |
