Right now it is only in the 6.10.x alpha releases.

This is by the way a problem with Snow leopard itself. It broke all screen savers. But as said, if you update to BOINC 6.10.14 you'll see it works again.

FWIW: I just upgrade to BOINC 6.10.17 and I have Snow Leopard and a Macbook. The screensaver is COMPLETELY unwatchable due to extreme graphic glitches, tearing, flashing, flickering, etc.. And that's with only one WU running on this dual-core system (to keep the heat down). Screensaver looked great back on Leopard. Now with SL and 6.10.17, unusable!

I can confirm this problem : even if it's not continuous, it's very common.

If I don't know what the source of this problem is, I have an idea about it : as described here, this problem affects too Stellarium, an open source planetarium software. Because the same problem affects 2 different softwares on the same OS, it's possible that the problem comes from a display API which changes between 10.5 and 10.6.

Maybe an exchange between BOINc developpers and Stellarium developpers could be fruitful.

We have not been able to reproduce this. What model Mac are you using, and what graphics card or chipset? You can get this information from /Applications/Utilities/System Profiler. Also, which version of the OS are you running? Please reply in this thread.

Thank you.

graphics gma950 (yes, i know - but it worked fine before...)

Does this help? I have NOT yet upgraded to boinc 6.10.21 because there are no notes posted yet as to what that contains. Later i'll try it.

The Change Log thread on the BOINC Dev forums contains the changes.

I did a web search for gma950 Snow Leopard and saw quite a bit of discussion about compatibility problems. I also saw a post saying that OS 10.6.2 had fixed at least some of these. Have you tried OS 10.6.2?

Ok, I'm on Mac Os 10.6.2 now and the problem DOES seem to be resolved. Hm. I guess Apple fixed my video driver or something. I'm glad they didn't completely abandon those of us with 2-year-old Macbooks!

So I guess this issue is closed. Thanks folks!

DISregard my last post that said the issue was resolved now. It worked for the first few times the screensaver ran and now it's back to scattering hash all over the screen in a flickery bad-vertical-hold kind of way.

BOINC ver 6.10.21
Mac OS X 10.6.2

Again, graphics are GMA950. I'm having no other problems with apps with graphics. Just SETI@home screensaver.

I have the same configuration (SL 10.6.2 BOINC 6.10.21 GMA 950) on a Mac Mini and am having the same problem. Has been an issue from the first SL install. The only other program I have that shows this issue, interestingly, is Star Wars Battlefront....much to my son's chagrin.

Apparently, the Stellarium team solved the problem by using the 4.6 version of Qt graphics library.

Is there any word on whether SETI@Home folks are going to fix this? Hey, this is free stuff so I'm not complaining - just wondering. I used to enjoy looking at the screensaver occasionally. Now it's still unwatchable on Snow Leopard. I thought the just-released 10.6.3 version of SL would help due to some alleged graphics drivers improvements, but it's as bad as ever.

How can I get a screen saver that looks like a 3d graph of the data my Mac is analyzing?

It doesn't look like there is much that SETI@home can do. The SETI screensaver doesn't use the Qt graphics library.

I did a Google search for gma 950 Snow Leopard and saw a number of posts describing problems with the gma 950 on Macbooks using Snow Leopard. Apparently, the Macbooks are 64-bit capable so they run Snow Leopard in 64-bit mode, but the gma 950 drivers are only 32-bit. Take a look at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Intel_GMA#Mac_OS_X.

You might look at the following to see if they offer any solutions:
http://www.insanelymac.com/forum/index.php?showtopic=143340
http://www.insanelymac.com/forum/index.php?showtopic=212164

Since this issue occur only with the gma 950, it seems to be a problem with Snow Leopard. We recommend you report the issue to Apple.

Sorry I can't offer more help.
