I have no idea what's wrong with BOINC. Yesterday, it was working fine. I haven't downloaded any new versions or anything for a while, but today all I see is a blank screen, and just to see if it was still running, I made a note of what progress I had, then left it alone for a few hours. When I came back, I saw that no progress had been made. Can somebody tell me what's wrong? (And please put on the kid gloves, I'm not computer literate)

Not sure, but I would check your power saver settings. It's possible that your machine is going into 'Suspend' mode when not in use. Because BOINC runs at a low priority it may not stop the machine going to sleep.

Rebooting worked! I need to remember that something so simple works for so many things.

By the way, when my pooter goes into Suspend mode, the monitor switches off. When I had this problem, the monitor stayed on as if there was still a picture being sent to it.
