Good luck with that.........

When new processors are introduced, the top end usually starts out at about a thousand dollars......I should know.

Won't be there on this wave though.......the kitties have spent all their kibbles on Cuda cards, and shall be on the sidelines.

Struggling to keep in the top twenty producers on this project, but the bar keep going up..............

Yeah.. best thing about the I9 is that it will make the I7s cheaper :)

2 x cheapo quad cores shold still beat an I7, but Moores law rolls on.

The i9's are planned for Q2 2010 & the 8 core xeons are planned for Q1 2010. The i9 is rumered to be around $1500, but we will not really know until it hits the street.

Looks like i9 may be packaged with a (very baseline) enthusiast cooler.

that looks pretty robust. I have a larger similar HSF which has room for a 2nd 120mm fan to suck while the first blows

i9 will have much more L2 cache per core than the i7/i5..... that'll be the good news..

But then again, by there you will be able to add one or two GT300/Cuda 3.0 based card to your cheap machine, for less money (probaly) and blow away the nomatterhowmuchcores machine.

Hang in there, in a few Moores years they will come with as many as 64 cores and sufficient ram, (a couple of GB for each core) on a single chip. Moores law is safe for the next 10 or 15 years I am told.
When we finally figure it all out, all the rules will change and we can start all over again.

Having recently upgraded to all-i7's I am hoping they will be able to support them with a BIOS upgrade on existing motherboards (ASUS P6T's). But knowing the marketing people they probably wouldn't want that as they couldn't sell you a new mobo then.

Wonder if that processor will be upwards of 140W thermal output? Too hot for me. I'm sticking with i7. Video card is next upgrade, as I'm still with 8k series NVIDIA. I'll let everyone else buy the $1500 i9 chip and bench it for me.

Yet, you know Intel is going to say that the hex core chips are just not compatible with existing I7 motherboards.

Also, why do they call this I9? Are there an extra 3 hidden processors that we can use to crunch with? :)

Ill bet that i9 will crunch some numbers though. I wont run out and buy one for a few years. But I agree the i7 will be cheaper. And I sure like my i7. so say when the old P4 finally kicks the bucket Id build another i7 job with a few cuda cards.

And Mark, If i win the lotto ill buy a house next to a liquid nitrogen company and cool my beasties down that way:)

Depends on your budget and what you want to accept for power consumption....
An OC'd 920 and a single GTX295 make a very fine cruncher.
2 295's really ups the ante on power consumption.

Be interesting to see how the i9 washes out as far as performance/watt compared to the i7.

I'm afraid I shall not be running the tests....LOL.
