Mainly auto update, could be optioned to notify, or just do it...

The 1 feature would be a standardized user profile "in the client", which would update all BOINC participant sites xml'ishly on submit.

Participant sites might have an expanded profile, or an "aliasing ability", but the basics would be universal to all and client controlled.

I assume you mean of the BOINC client? That won't happen, it has been asked plenty of times before. BOINC is run by companies and Universities as well where the system admins don't really like anything auto-updating itself. It may cause crashes and other (incompatibility) problems.

An auto-update then with the option to opt-in, by default set to opt-out? Has also been requested plenty of times, but I don't think it'll ever come.

BOINC will show a message in the Messages log if a newer client than the one you run is available. Of course, this message will only show when you run a recommended version of BOINC and the recommended version on the download site changes. It won't show it on development versions with a higher number.

Yes, I meant the BOINC client. I've seen posts here that refer to the client xyz.123 dev/rc/released and am not sure always if it's referring to a standalone SETI developed client or BOINC.

I DL'ed the version of BOINC recommended on the BOINC site to start with, but see no messages as you mention in my log, so I assume my version is most current? Will hit up the BOINC site to check tho.

It would be a useful feature

Update notifications tend to disappear rather quickly when buried in the message log and is easily missed. Hopefully Boinc will take advantage of the News tab when that planned feature is introduced in a future version. It should be make easier to know when to update.

Seti doesn't develop clients. With client we mean BOINC, the applications that do the science are the projects their doing. So client = BOINC, application = Seti.

World Community Grid (project) and GridRepublic (account manager) do develop clients of their own.

If you do not see a message alike this:
Fri 25 Sep 2009 03:26:36 PM XXXX||A new version of BOINC (6.6.40) is available for your computer

Then your version is up-to-date. Do know, the example I gave is a message for a Linux box. The message repeats itself at every scheduler contact with whatever project you're contacting.

Recommended versions at the time of writing:
Windows, Windows x64: 6.6.38
Linux, Linux x64: 6.6.40
Macintosh: 6.6.36

Latest available Alpha versions at the time of writing:
Windows, Windows x64: 6.10.9
Linux, Linux x64: 6.10.6
