Is there a way to configure seti@home to use an external drive rather than my Macbook's internal drive? If not, are there plans to add this feature?

Not Seti as such, but BOINC. Seti will run on any drive that you tell BOINC to start on. Moving BOINC Manager or BOINC Data Folder to a Different Drive on MacOSX.
