Message 933758 - Posted: 16 Sep 2009, 16:08:39 UTC - in response to Message 933738.

I

but I'm unaware of what level of ATI this would require. I do know their are some relatively cheap ATI's out there. I'm currently running an ATI 2600 which is very nice still but not good enough for MW

AP/MB use float precision mostly so should go at least in part.

Can you change the poll so that you don't have to register/login with the site to cast a vote? I'm not a member of the forums over at Lunatics'.

Sutaru stated in the message to vote here not on their site.
[EDIT: UPDATE, please post ONLY here, I closed the poll on the Lunatics site.]

My card (HD4550) may not work though because it does not support double precision floating point operations...

This as I have 2 systems 1 with Nvidia and 1 with ATI,

My observation is that the Nvidia board runs a normal temperature and the ATI board could be used to make myself a nice warm room and in extreme cases even dinner as hot as it runs. The ATI gets up to max tmeperature of 65 degrees celsius with ease and the Nvidia isn't really that hot. also excessive heat production means a lot of unnessecary power consumption. I checked the board and the fans repeatedly and it seems the only way I could cool it better would be either water or freon. And the worst thing it's NOT OC-ed...

Oh and a HD 3850 is a 512 Mb AGP 8x card so it's quite outdated...

Don't get an Nvidia GTX295, then. With the default fan settings (no o/c) that gets up to 100 degrees C.

I know you can use that card on Collatz as I have my 4350 crunching over there.

It's the first that does double precision, it works quite well with the projects that do ATI apps. It rocks my system, but then I guess the whole system is outdated. At 427GFlops it's quite a bit better than most Nvidia cards. ;-)

I have no reason to buy a different GPU.
This one works for my photo editing, and for SETI.
There is no reason to spend more money !

I.

I do have a 4870x2.
It would be a nice if we could load some Seti workunits (I hope more that 2 at a time) on the "ATI horse" (ati means horse in Greek).
The only thing I'm concerning about is the noise from the fan and the temperature it would give.

More than likely the ATi chips will run at high temps.

Ideally, you wouldn't want to run more than one app per GPU assuming the application is well threaded to utilize all registers/functionality. This would be the ideal situation for multi-core CPUs as well.

My 4830 gets up to 55C when crunching a couple of MW units.

I have a ATI Radeon HD4890 and use it for crunch in MilkyWay. I hope that SETI@home and Einstein@Home developers make an ATI GPU applications.

I have dual ATI 4350 with R710, doing 96 GFLOPS each. Installed 6.10.6 today, but can't get any WU:s. *sob*

That's because SETI does not have an ATi application out. BOINC v6.10.x might be adding ATi aupport, but each science project has to release an ATi compatible program to utilize the functionality.

So far the only project that will support the 4350 is Collatz.
