Message 968073 - Posted: 4 Feb 2010, 14:02:12 UTC - in response to Message 932362.

I saw a documentary a couple months ago called Life Without People http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Life_After_People and in there it said "Even our radio and television signals that were beamed into space, and once thought to traverse for hundreds of light years, will have faded to unrecognizable static at close to two light years and not even reach our closest stellar neighbor, Alpha Centauri."

That being the case, an alien civilization would have to put more power behind a signal than probably our whole planet generates to get it from wherever to us. When I saw that, I couldn't believe it. They even mentioned speaking with SETI scientists, but I do not remember who specifically. That statement on this show makes me wonder exactly the same thing you mentioned. Is there still any chance of finding ET or are we just doing this because we've done it for 11 years now?

Wow Michael ... a first time poster with more than 1.000.000 Cobblestones!

ET will find us again when we are ready to understand the communication.

... might be awhile yet but, I think we should remain hopeful ;)

Since water vapor is a main interfering agent of radio waves, this makes finding a signal less than zero.

An intelligent ET is going to live on a water planet, with a very wet atmosphere-as we do. The Signal looked for will then be obscured/discombobulated and once Spacebound a signal impossible to detect.

The only way for ET Signal to be detected is for ET to have facilities on dry/atmosphereless planets. This means they are travellers. Either robotic or human/robotic. Will they want to create these beacons for others to notice?

It keeps getting more unlikely a signal will ever be found.

I'm also wandering when the Voyager craft get beyond the Termination Shock, Heliopause, and Bow Shock, whether their signals(assuming they still have power to send) will be detectable.

iStack 'em.

Well, we who have faith in things unknown shall continue to search for seed past sown.
And keep the faith in this ol' quest......

But I am sure YOU know what is the best.........and which IS an illusion.....

All the Cosmic Radio Stations are off. Their signals have disappeared into the Outer Limits. Do not adjust your Radio Telescopes; do not upgrade the hardware; do not adjust the software; do not adjust the crunchers. The Signal is non-existent. Turn on your receivers at your own expense, frustration and continue a slow descent into Oblivion. History will forget.

But: ET will be found. A Signal will be found. Just not by anyone here. Someone, somewhere, working on something totally unrelated will discover, by accident, what all of you are so fruitlessly endeavoring to do. Today or Eons from now. By possibly a new Intelligent Species on Earth once Homo Sapiens has fossilized and been digitized into Obscurity.

Once I was like you. I had Hope and Enthusiasm for The Signal/ET. But then after many wasted, costly cpu hours I actually did some Critical Thinking. Realized it is hopeless and Enthusiasm should be burned out on other Endeavors which can produce Fruit and the Eating thereof.

You have your dreams, I have mine.
I shall follow mine 'till the end. Whatever it's outcome.

Out There, somewhere, They can hear. They are advanced by Tens of 1000s of years. They have been listening/watching Us from Hitler to Ahmadinejad. They are beyond feeling pity. In fact, they laugh their somethings off. There is no WOW factor for them in the discovery of our Signal. They watch us on 108,000p HDTV on Channels 10,000-11,000. They call Us Inlanders, since we are inner to The Milky Way Center from them. We are boring entertainment.

They are not constricted by politics/funding and have developed ways of listening beyond the Speed of Light. Almost instantaneous. They travel their own Solar System throughout its boundaries, but they don't have light speed vehicles. The restriction of moving mass is Universal in its slowness. They know no one in The Milky Way and Other Galaxies are traveling beyond their own systems.

They can contact us, but have learned through other efforts the mistake of it.
When watching a show about our efforts at detecting a Signal they know the uselessness of it, except for a technological achievement. They know it will fail and be left for the Far Future. By then, the ability will be the result of Advancing Technology, long after efforts like SETI have disappeared into Archives not ever referenced to and thoughts like it never entering the mind.

Did they ever long ago wonder, "Are We Alone"? No. And they are better for it. Now that they Know, and have the ability of Contact and see and hear Others, they realize how smart they were and are.

They know it will fail and be left for the Far Future.

Futures are built on failures. The failures have to be well intentioned, well thought out, and well documented, in order to contribute to the future. Not saying SETI is one of those already, but the worst it can be is another data point on the path towards the "right" solution. At best, it may be much more in the next few decades or centuries.

Patience, Grasshopper.

I, for one, will continue to contribute (not that a few spare CPU cycles is that big a sacrifice).

With my recent average credit of 10, I have as much of a chance of being the "One" to crunch the "Signal" as someone with recent average credit of, let's say, 120,000. Don't you think?

And with my not running SETI at all now, my chances of finding the "Signal" have gone up exponentially.

You think?

Now, I'm being totally Scientific here. Not joking, being sarcastic, or making fun at all. Due to past performance, and likely future performance, statistically, I am doing as well finding the "Signal" as the Man on the Moon, someone as cold as a frozen TV dinner, or as hot as someone in Hates.

Really. Belief, Hope, Hard Work, Dedication, Technology and Perserverance are Great Things, but the Mathematical, Statistical, Hard Science Fact is that I will find the "Signal".

This is basically the thinking NASA has been using for the last 30 years in their search for a Space Shuttle replacement. "This is really hard, so I'll quit and try something else." Look where it got them.

If you quit SETI, why do you hang around on the Forums?

Oh my gosh, is this one of those Trolls everybody talks about?

If there is a Signal, and I would say there is one to three, at the most, from different Star Systems, it has already been detected. Probably not deciphered yet.

Not found by SETI. By a Private or Government entity. NSA or the like? The City has the horsepower for it. And no telling what certain mega rich people have for equipment in their "sheds".

It would never be disclosed until the "finders" had it deciphered and were sure it could be used to their advantage.

There is no egalitarian or altruistic reasons for releasing news of the Signal.

Not even for a certain project which is the favorite of some here.

Nope. Unless the Signal smacks a whole lot of people right in the face, there will be no knowledge of it for a long, long, time.

That's assuming there is a Signal.

So Believers got it bad all ways. Left in The Dark for All times. On purpose, and for lack of paying the bill.

Oh well. It's a Deep and Dark Dilemma.

Yours truly, iStack 'em (c)

...Trolls...?!? =P

It's chicken, not troll anyway. If chicken isn't clucking, then it's not called as chicken right. We should try to respect its point of view. Diversity is beautiful, although sometimes it sound like a poke fun to this project.

Sorry but you're wrong on this one, Dr. Ceti--when people are banned their messages are hidden. Misfit did not start this thread. I think the originator was "Chicken Stacker".

The Microbrain's said: "ugly bags of mostly water"

Terry Bisson said: "They're made out of meat"

Chicken Stacker says: "crunching is crack to them"

And ET says: "Block the signals, them wet, stoned meatbags are crazy"

Hope floats and gravity sucks and never shall they meet.

Searching for ET most definitely, don't care much about credits.

I don't believe in God since I haven't met him/her and neither do I believe in E.T.I. and certainly not one near enough Earth to have a conversation with. However, the science that goes into SETI and other BOINC projects and similar I think is part of necessary steps for us (the human race) to get away from that big hot thing in the sky before it expands and proximity to Earth becomes irrelevant.
